I own a hosting and web development company and we've just completed a freelance application that allows people to post projects and then receive bids on those projects. Would something like this be popular for the SL Community? Would you as an "employer" or "freelancer" use this for things like scripts, building, animations, clothing, etc? This would be similar to www.guru.com but for SL-related projects only. We also have developed scripts for job postings (like www.monster.com), dating (like www.cupid.com), and a few other applications that are already being offered very well by other resident-run sites. So what's needed?

How about links to these sites of yours? Yes, the e-project-bay idea is a good one. I would use it to get quotes for scripts.

Yeah I think requesting projects would be pretty popular but I'm not sure that there would a lot of people actually bidding on them.
I say that mostly from personal experience -- it seems all the scripters are swamped. :|

What would be offered under your plan and by whom? Scripters could offer existing scripts, presumably at low prices, with an offer to customize at a much higher price. On the other hand, a request for services might be more successful than you think if you have a tagging scheme that lets scripters easily find requests that approximate scripts they already have in hand. From: Thinkerer Melville I thought, from your first post that you were talking about requesting projects. What would be offered under your plan and by whom? That's correct. It would be for residents to request things like scripts, building projects, whatever. Scripters and builders would then bid on those projects. What I mentioned before was that my fear is that there will be way more requests for projects than people to do them. It seems as though every scripter I've contacted for personal projects is swamped already. Are there any scripters/builders reading this that would use a service like this?

I can't speak for others, and I haven't gotten into serious LSL scripting (yet). However, my experience with other such sites for more diverse programming tasks is that they mostly bring out customers with unrealistically low expectations and programmers who either aren't worth what they charge or don't know enough to charge what they're worth. The only developers who seem to be able to make money on such sites are those living in countries with favorable costs and exchange rates - typically Eastern Europe, where there are a lot of very good developers and insufficient local demand for their skills.
This doesn't mean that a SL-specific site would turn out the same way. My guess is that it wouldn't, at least not for some time, because the community is both smaller and tighter. But for many of us who do freelance software engineering, it's not something I'd hang my hat on. (Actually, I don't think there's enough money in SL scripting to be worth my while, compared to other areas where I have more expertise.)
