At least one of the social networks (Facebook/MySpace) has a rule that you can only make a page for a real person, and that person must be yourself. Which means that unfortunately SL avatars are forbidden.
I can't recall which one though.
Honestly, I would suggest something like wordpress. Wordpress really lets you customize your blog, without getting too bogged down in the mechanism that is "other social media sites".
A lot of SL users seem to use "PLURK" I'm not sure what it is, to be honest.. but I know that I use twitter for microblogging, and up til now, I have been maintaining my blog(s) on livejournal... but LJ's ad culture has started to get annoying to me.
Honestly, twitter and wordpress is all I really need. Flicker /Snapzilla (slpics.com) for images, and that's all the publishing I really want to do.

A lot of people use Blogger, I just started using it and so far I like it.
The site has been around a long time (used to be Blogspot) and so is pretty much bug free. Not so many bells and whistles, but works very well.

Wordpress is fantastic for organization and has a wonderful interface to work with. The serious drawback is that they do not allow you to embed flash content. Although you can run it on your own server and enable embedding on your own.
