Wooden spaceships?

I've been building my spaceship home for longer than I care to admit, and I've been trying to achieve a "luxury" look and feel to it.

I've recently asked some friends and acquaintances for comments on it and one thing that was said surprised me--"Wood doesn't belong in a spaceship."

Umm, Picard's ready room was wood paneled, as I recall. And I can remember a few other wood accents, such as the bridge railing where the security station was located. Other than that, I'll have to admit, I can't recall seeing much wood paneling, or wood furniture in a spaceship.

FWIW, this is my own design, owing little, if anything to Star Trek, or any other SF series. Also, I wouldn't describe it as steampunk, but, some of the fittings wouldn't be out of place in a steam punk style airship for example. So, assuming it all looks good, (a matter of personal opinion of course.) Do wooden walls, accents, or furniture belong in spacecraft?

I don't know, maybe, I would have to see it in context. As for friends telling you to make something that looks just like everything else out there, just ignore them.

Your creation, your imagination. Who cares what the current SF cliche is? Besides, it seems reasonable that people spending a long time in the void of space would want to make their rooms look nice.

they deserve a slapping, it's SL you can do what you like. i'v got a spaceship i'v been working on on and off for some time now, jules verne inspired, it has wood on the outside hull, looks dam good too if you ask me. That doesn't matter tho the whole thing could be made of rubber, or paper, or jelly, it's SL, you do what you like. Wood has much more of a warmer feel & look than metal too, i know i'd prefer it.

EDIT: ok maybe slapping is a little harsh

I suppose not in RL... but this is Second Life. Create the way YOU like it! And don't invite them over for tea. ;)

Most recent example of wood on a television spaceship I can recall is Admiral Cain's office on the Battlestar Pegasus.

Doctor Who, of course, uses it with reckless abandon. The Tardis is made of wood. And it travels through both time and space.

Wood is fine on a spaceship. Unless you're The Doctor, though, I wouldn't make the actual spaceship out of it. Just some interior paneling or accents.

Just say "it's tritanium with a wood finish, moron! Can't you tell the difference?"
Real SF fans will find a SF explanation to anything.

What is wrong with wood in a spaceship? I mean, if you could choose between a beautiful wood-inlaid interior in your RL car and the usual pebbled plastic, which would you prefer? Even if your RL home has all of the most modern conveniences, are your cabinets and furniture all made of plastic or metal, or do you prefer wood? What makes anyone think that in the World of Tomorrow everyone is suddenly going to hate wood or the look of it? This has always bothered me. We live in an age of portable computers and cell phones and smart appliances, but regardless of what Science Fiction movies predicted, we're not dressed in nylon jumpsuits, we don't have metal-and-plastic walls in our homes, and people are willing to pay extra for home furnishings of organic material.

I think we're going to see bamboo interiors in spaceships and some kind of lab-grown wood.

It's funny how current aesthetics impact how we think of the future. But as easy as it is for us to see the Victorian influences in Jule's Verne's visions or giggle at the hairstyles in old science fiction movies, it is blessed near impossible to see our OWN filter we are applying to the future.

The only thing I am certain of is that the future will not meet our current preconceptions. Spaceships will not look like the ones on NASA's showroom floor today. Personally, I hope for wood furnishings and overstuffed couches to curl up on. And airships, did I mention airships?
