Along with the friends list and tray icon, it also has a pop-up notification when friends log on or off.

Just so there is no confusion, I created a similar app to one released just this week6 months ago with the exact same name: SL Friends Online , available at http://www.josiehamilton.com

Lol - you mean all 3 of them as I finally launched SL Friends Monitor this weekend on www.slprofiles.com which was actually created about 6 months ago as well - just never had the time to package it up.
