Hi

There seems to be a good number of bloggers here :)

Can someone recommend a good blog to me? I need the following:

FULLY customizable (HTML, CSS, graphics etc)
Control over visitor input (i.e. reviewing comments before they go live)
Spam control
Free would be nice :) , but a reasonable yearly fee is acceptable if it means not having third-party ads.
Plug-ins and toys not really an issue. Won't be using news feeds, calendars etc

I could also install a blog on our current server but updates to it must be web-based. I.e. I manage the site but the new posts are made by someone who does not have access to the server. For simplicity, I'd prefer the blog to just be hosted elsewhere.

Any thoughts on this?

B.

There is a plethora of free blog services (hosted) out there - but the price is that you get adverts, etc. - aimed at both you and your readers.

If you have your own server space, then the following link will serve as a starting point for free blog tools, some of which aren't bad at all:

Try blogger.com, or wordpress.com
They are both free:) I use blogger at the minute and have no problems with it. You can choose if you want ads etc on it or not (there isn't any on mine) And for $10 a year you can upgrade it so as it has your own domain name eg; example.com instead of example.blogspot.com.

I built my own wordpress server. I like it a lot. A hosted solution wouldn't really work for me. I suppose relatively speaking it is aburdly expensive though.

I have a free blog at wordpress.com, and there is no advertising on it.

It's very customizable.

You can create multiple blogs so you could go make sandbox blog as well as your for-real blog. There are lots of stats to look at, including (my favorite) the searches and links that brought people to your blog.

If you have hosting space, Wordpress.org (downloadable version) is a good application. Wordpress.com (on their servers) doesn't allow too much freedom to modify the html.

One can get a free hosting site that provides an installer script to load wordress, or several other blogs. I don't think they all have ads. Freehostia will do that, I think. Whether there are free ones that have enough free space and adequate uptime, I don't know.
