hi all, im new to SL and started 2 days ago. last night i attended a great beginers class and would love to attend more. one problem is im from england and most of the classes are way to late for my poor eyes and i have to be awake early for my 2 year old :(

i know i cant expect you to hold all events earlier just for me hehe so could some one tell me what times the events are for us English people, so i can atleast work out which ones i want to stay up for and what time i can crash

also what classes do you think are best for us beginers to take, and how often

ty for all your help :)

Hello Joya, Resident Instructor Eggy Lippmann at your service.
I am portuguese, so my timezone is GMT as well. I teach Basic Building and Land Editing on Fridays, right after dinner, and then go to bed.
The Lindens are a bit restrictive on when we can schedule classes, since there has to be someone online to announce them.
My classes are essential for newbies, and so there are other instructors teaching them as well. I can help you all you want outside normally scheduled classes of course, thats what we are here for.
You dont really need to attend more than one class of each kind, unless you had trouble understanding the first one.
If there is sufficient demand from fellow europeans the Lindens (which are always very friendly and reasonable) will no doubt allow me to teach at more normal times. The problem is that european player influx is very small right now, so its not really justifiable for them to have a class just for europeans.
So tell all your friends about SL and you will even get 3000 linden bucks for each one who joins! :)

Hello Jova, welcome to Second Life!

I'm also in England, and I teach basic building on Mondays at 10pm our time. Like Eggy says, the Lindens aren't too keen on having classes earlier, hopefully this will change (*nudges David hint hint*). Matina Appleby is another European that takes classes, you might be able to get to some of hers.

If you want a lesson, find me in game and I'll get you started. I'm usually around in the evenings. I only ever took a basic building class when I first started - once you've done that you tend to get the confidence to experiment and try everything else :)

Events are different to classes - these can be held at any time, get to as many as you can and make some friends! Look for events held by Candie Apple - she quite often holds
themed building events at weekends which are early evening for us, and are great for newcomers. If you're around at 6pm tonight, there is a tea party in Rose held by Taylor Thompson which sounds like fun :)

Finally, don't worry if it all seems overwhelming - you will settle in I promise!

thanks thats a big help :) and dont worry ive already had 2 friends from the uk signed up and plently more friends to ask yet so there will be a few more people in our time zone :D, i just got to remind them to mention me as they sign up and i can get rich rarrrr

i spend most of my time in SL from 7pm to 12 midnight gmt so a class or event here and there just a hour or so earlier would suit me great, though i can do earlier and later on weekends so ill use that to my advantage :)

Hi, Jova!

First off -- Welcome to SL!

Second.... I am in the US, but a lot of my play time is at night. If you need any assistance with anything, feel free to drop me an IM or swing by. I'm a Mentor and an Instructor, so always willing to lend a helping hand!

Hi Jova --

You're the one who built that house next to my (I have yet to figure out what to call it -- any ideas?) ship-type build in Chartreuse, right? Welcome :) (even if you aren't, the welcome still stands)

As far as classes go -- I took 1 beginning building class, then went ahead and took an advanced class from Shadow Weaver. IMO, his advanced classes just need you to have a working knowledge of the build tools -- his explanations are pretty clear. After that I started experimenting with building objects on my own and never looked back.

Darzus -- Search the forums for a thread by Jay Powers on SL astronomy. IIRC, it's something like a 4 hour cycle. You can move the sun via the debug menu, but that's only true for your own client -- other people will have their own sun settings. I'm at work so I can't check the commands, tho. :/

SL time

Hey Darzus (and others), here's some fresh info on SL Time. (Note I've been measuring based on the point where the sun is just touching, or has just completely risen clear of, the horizon.)

Days and nights are not of constant length; the day varies between about 163 minutes and about 173 minutes, while nights vary between about 66 minutes and about 76 minutes. Day+Night is about 4 hours long.

You can generally count on a sunset around 7PM (EASTERN) at night (give or take a few minutes), and the following sunrise around 8:15 Eastern. Sunset after that starts around 11 Eastern and night lasts until about 12:15 eastern.

With insufficient data to be sure, I estimate that the time between the "longest day" and "shortest day" of the "year" is 5 SL days, or about 20 hours.

But that's beside the point. SL Astronomy FAQ coming Real Soon Now, I promise :)

I'm sure that there are a lot of people here in the US that have strange work schedules (myself included) that prohibit them from attending more events.

It's even worse when you don't have weekends off, when things seem most active.
