Last night I hosted a building class at The Learning Center in Mauve. Some people actually showed up to ask questions and make stuff! Happily Lordfly offered to help which was great because I couldn't answer some of the questions the new players had. Then we did a few quick building exercises like making a wall with a window in it. And despite both of us being half in the bag, we managed to pull off a class that some new players seem to enjoy.

A while back someone posted a thread about how there are so few classes in SL now. I had toyed with the idea of volunteering to teach a basic class but felt that I probably wasn't enough of an expert to be teaching anything. But after last night, I really want to do another.

So if there's anyone out there who has been kicking around the idea... go for it!

I've been kicking around an idea for a class on how to upload and apply textures but I too am afraid that I'd get asked something that I could not answer and also that I could not handle responding to all of the text myself alone. I never thought of teaming up with someone though and that is a great idea.

Anyone want to team up with me to give a texturing class? :D

Absolutely! I'm not that good with clothing textures (yet!) but I'm pretty good for finding/making textures for everything else. Just lemme know when and I'll make sure to be there. =D

I've got to applaud Jase Byrne for his efforts in this area -- 40 members in Touchstone! Of course, he needs all of us to get to **teaching**, but it's a start...

That class sounds great Ingrid. Having LF as a teacher's assistant for a building class ... hahah nice, some expert assistance!

Rose, remember, if you can't answer a question at the moment, just say you'll need to get back to them on it, jot it down and you can always IM them the answer later.

I've held off too since i haven't had time to prepare class notes/images/etc. Plus, there is always so much more to know, i feel like a perpetual beginner.

But yeah, I should launch into it as well. I bet we'll find we'll learn a lot teaching the classes too.

You absolutely need a partner for classes unless you VERY carefully qualify people to be in your class.

The partner doesn't even necessarily have to be there; just available. In the event a student is falling behind or just being problematic, you offload managing them to the partner and have them take it to IMs so that you don't fall into a training black hole. Although I hesitate to strut Mentor or Live Help status, if somebody is giving you grief and a tagged ava shows up, things tend to settle down.

Good luck with teaching, it's fun for a while.

You guys can contact Jamie Otis of The Learning Center. He has a nice green sandbox and "learning facility" in Mauve that you can use for your class.

And I learned things myself last night from LF. Yeah, couldn't ask for a better "assistant" :D

I, and I'm sure others, would REALLY love some more advanced level classes. I always see introductory classes but never more advanced techniques.

The one thing that seems probably necessary is to set prerequisits in the class announcement of what skill levels attendess should alread possess.
