What has happened to manners? Can I not be sitting in my house without someone walking in unannounced. Doesn't matter if i was naked, dressed, alone or had company, wether the house was on the ground or 600m up in the air. I enjoy having visitors, but come on folks use some common courtesy.
*takes a deep breath*
I really don't want to turn on the land restrictions, nor do I want to buy a home protection device, but honestly... just a simple comment in say.. Anyone home and can I come in would go a long way.

Yeha, it's more than bit creepy and/or ominous when someone walks in quietly without saying anything, their avatar-eyes dead without much expression, and on top of that they might be carrying a weapon in hand. As they draw near, they clunkily stumble around the furniture and give you a passing look before stumbling some more, and then eventually flying away. Or something like that. A simple "Hello!" before coming closer is really nice.

I was at a friends place today and we were all in the hot tub and out of nowhere this personlands in the midle of the tub and proceeds to just rudely start asking questions. No hello can I join you or anything. People really need to think before they do things they'd make a lot more friends that way.

From: Torley Torgeson ... their avatar-eyes dead without much expression, and on top of that they might be carrying a weapon in hand. As they draw near, they clunkily stumble around the furniture and give you a passing look before stumbling some more, and then eventually flying away. It's so true. XD That kind of thing is creepy, and it kind of makes you wonder why people think they can get away with it, since you wouldn't be able to in RL, and we do pay for our land (usually). I mean, the "wel if u dont lyk it u cna ban me" thing is kind of.. Well, let's put it this way: I wouldn't walk into someone's RL house and, when they stared at me like O_O????!!, say "Well, if you want me to leave, then call the cops." I mean, fly-bys and all that are sometimes pretty fun. So you wouldn't want to ban everyone who comes to your parcel, anyway. But it is really strange/annoying when people just fly up and say nothing, fly up when you're busy, sometimes with company, and start bothering you, fly up and ask you why your house is so ugly, etc. etc. etc. They're not serious things, usually, but it is kind of something to furrow your brow at. And it'd be nice if people were a little more well-versed in common etiquette.

What about a scripted locked door? That always made me feel safe. Honestly, I will explore houses if I see they are unoccupied. I just always assume if someone didn't want me in their place, they would lock it up. I would *never* go into someone's house if I knew they were there. I agree there is a huge lack of manners these days. But there are ways to prevent it. Not the best solution, I guess.

From: Kate Hanks What about a scripted locked door? If they were REALLY motivated, they could just ride a prim in.  But, yes, I doubt someone like that would go through all the trouble. My last house was teleport-in ONLY. And most people didn't know how to get in. So random people would just fly around looking in the windows. o_O;

True, you can get a locked door, but not all houses always have that option, and what's wrong with practicing a little common courtesy that one can't just barge into a place? I guess it's the virual world so people perhaps figure barriers like that don't count.. I had a lot of people stopping in and just barging in, and I finally up up the land restrictions because it just got creepy and out of hand. Heck, someone hovered over my house and in spatial, complained that they couldn't get into the property.. and bitched me out for it. Well, sorry, it's my land, and heh, people do stop at times to mention they like the house and the like, and I don't mind tellng them where I got it, but it's creepy to just have people strolling on in, without a by your leave and stuff. Also, yes, my house has windows, and people will just sit outside at times and stare in..hell, I guess it's good I'm entertaining someone at times. Oh, and hi sis! <waves at Ash>

I honestly don't understand the described behavior, myself. I'm very conscious of invading privacy and hate to be nuisance to others. Shortly after Chinatown opened, I was rooting around the structures and doing my thorough exploration thang. I popped through a phantom window to discover myself in a bedroom-looking space. And there was Foxy, with some male company. Quite mortified at my (accidental) intrusion, I apologized and quickly excused myself. Privacy and respect with regard to other players is a pretty important concept for me. I'm surprised when others don't mirror that concern. edit: So we're clear: everyone was clothed

If you really don't want people barging in, take a page from MMORPGs - park a high level dragon or god NPC nearby with a large aggro range. Because it's a virtual world, people are going to explore. It's funny that I can go from reading threads about the majority of people wanting to do things in SL that they wouldn't do in RL, and hence the popularity of revealing outfits (when wearing clothes at all) and sex related events to threads complaining that people don't act more like they do in RL over issues like this. I can definitely understand the side of those who pay for the land, though. But are you taking the time to tell in-game the people who you describe the same things that you've posted here, and in a civilized manner?

On the plus side, glean this blessing in disguise: it says more about them as a person than anything about you when you get those bad vibes without mutual interaction. So you get to learn a little more about humanity (or lack of courtesy *sigh*). Even with such a "filter" that hides body language and aspects of who someone is behind the keyboard, SL as a communication medium opens up new gateways of how people truely show themselves. I've seen some newbies who didn't really get around to customing their avs yet, but the way they expressed themselves in chat and how they conducted themselves in social spaces really wowed me -- and I could tell great things were gonna come their way. Several months later, I was all-too-happy to be updated about their progress!
