I know we can all fly and teleport but I wanted to explore other ways of getting around SL. And i know there are aircraft which can fly around.

(hitched a ride on a Terra Airship which floats around several sims - congratulations to whoever built it. )

I obtain a copy of a free sail boat - but when i go to a river or water, i am told i cannot place my boat on the water - which is owned by LL. I really don't understand why we can't have access to all water, within reason. If I do find somewhere to set it down, the boat invariably gets stuck under a low bridge so i have to then fly over several sims to find a new place to set it down.

Then I get a skateboard - there are so many roads in SL, who uses them? No-one as far as I can see. So try to put my skateboard on a piece of road - same message as I get in water.

Can anyone explain to me why we can't use these areas of SL please?

Go to the find menu in game and type in vehicle rezzing area. There are quite a few in game owned by the Lindens and by citizens. There are rezzing areas by roads and by water.

You can, but, you have to access the roads and water from 'rezzing areas'. These areas are areas that are connected to the roadways/waterways, but, they let you rez things. Basically, they're like "on ramps". You wouldn't just plop a car down in the middle of the highway and start driving, you would plop your car down in your driveway and drive to the highway!

So, find one of these rezzing areas, rez your car/boat, and then use it to travel to the water way you want.

It would be cool to have the ability to rez a boat or vehicle whenever one wanted to while on a Linden-owned road or waterway. The downside of that ability would be that anything could be rezzed and become a potential obstruction to people wanting to travel. I think the Lindens have made a good compromise with making their right-of-ways not buildable and providing rezzing areas close to telehubs.

As was mentioned, some residents close to roads and water offer rezzing areas also. Click the Find button and do a Places search for the word "rez" and you'll find more places that allow rezzing of vehicles.

Thank you all for explaining - I'll check the rezzing places and if you see a mad woman, whizzing along on a skateboard, that will be me lol.
