Well on the majority I think the void sims are good, REALLY opens up the world for boaters and such, and easier to fly around.
Unfortunately though, Seacliffe will have to see more laggy sims nearby, but it's not alone in that. _____________________

Stupid question, but I've seen the sentiment echoed elsewhere. How are the void sims messing up Seacliff? Not having the world map in front of me, I seem to remember Seacliff connected to only one sim (southern border) with three potential voids around it, with Federal(?) at the NW corner. Is the problem extra traffic, extra lag, views into other not so pretty sims?
Not judging or anything, just curious. I myself had hoped for a void sim south of mine, but no dice, got a land sim instead a few weeks back. Oh well. |

The last of those choices, mainly. Lag too... I cannot see into any additional sims even with the new void sims around Federal - it should have no effect on your view - and not quite sure how an empty sim is going to add to your lag. I am excited about the change. Now if we can just get some closer damn telehubs, I am sick of flying 500m and more through laggy sims to get to my land ![]() _____________________

I can see Federal just fine from the shores of Seacilff island. Ah yes now I see - my land is further to the west so I hadn't noticed the corner. Edit - it could be worse, they could have connected you to Federal while Club Elite was still there ![]() _____________________

I have to admit. The idea of these void sims being shoved into the area around Seacliff made me worry that the history of Federal as a rather 'nasty' place would somehow rub off on Seacliff, despite the fact that Federal's art gallery is one of my first memories of SL. Plus it isn't exactly "pretty" compared to our other neighbors. I mean... take a look at what we have to our south! The SLPL is pretty, and the rest is mostly water!
I went to check out the area, and... well... it doesn't seem so bad now. Sure, yeah, staring into the face of Federal ain't exactly the most APPEALING thing about Seacliff, but I think I can stand it if it means more traffic. I even ran into Christiano who was visiting Seacliff for the first time because now it's easy to get to. Ok. This can be a good thing. Yay. Void sims. *warily eyes the void sims* |

Hah! Anyone notice the Omidyar sim? Hehehe. Nice touch.
That said... Seacliff, which is usually at around 1000-2000 SimFPS, is sitting at around 200-300 SimFPS. I honestly don't know if this is because of the Void sims or not, because I vaguely recall seeing something funny about the SimFPS earlier this week, but I don't know for sure. And 1000-2000 WAS it's normal amount for months. |

You mean I can now fly from stage 4 to my home in a straight line instead of crossing seven extra sims in an reversed "C" curve? Good.
That's Wheeeeeeworthy Thanks, Lindens _____________________

While I was looking for all the new void sims on the map...
10-28-2004 21:54
... I noticed lots of new sims that I hadn't seen before.
Two were in the upper NE corner of the map, off the main grid, and were joined to each other -- "Liasonland" and "Devel." I'd heard of rumors of these exisiting in the past, but had not seen them before. A whole slew of others were off the main grid in the lower SE portion of the map. Past the snow sims. These were all named the same, just numbered, like "HiddenLakes01," "HiddenLakes02," etc. There looked to be about 15 or so all clustered together in a long island chain that ran NE to SW. Did I think to take a photo? No! I looked again just a few minutes later and they were gone! Doh! Oh well... anyone heard of these before? _____________________

You were lucky enough to see the home of the gods for a moment or six. Feel blessed, and move on.

Would it be possible to remove the two void sims directly connecting Seacliff and Federal?

Freedom.

I have spent the last two days playing in the new inland sea the Lindens have extended The Grid into.
Rachleff, Shelef, Naveh, Kremer, Misso, Maloney, Evans, Omidyar, Mohr & Paroo. Whew! What a fundamental change in how I view this world. Prior to the new void sims, I had to boat or fly to different places by hugging the coast of the existing areas very closely. It was difficult to takeoff and land in my float plane as I would almost always run out of room. Now I can taxi out of the bay and experience a much more realistic takeoff as I get up to speed. Coming in for a landing is much easier as well. I can gently throttle back and make a graceful landing instead of having to plop it down on a small area of water. And the views... simply beautiful. I flew across the sea at sunset heading east toward Seacliff. Instead of the cramped approach it used to be as I hugged the coast coming up from Jenner, it was a beautiful experience approaching Seacliff directly from the west and coming down out of the clouds to see the island in all it's glory. What a jewel. ![]() And boating is a dream. A large sea to sail one's ship on. It really feels like an adventure to sail from one coast to the other now on the open water. And when you see another boat passing by yours, you can't help but say, "Ahoy!" And when land finally appears on the horizon -- "Land ho!" All of the places that border a newly revealed void sim will experience changes. Rodeo, where I live, is less remote now. More open to the rest of the world. I have seen quite a few new faces visiting in the last few days. Everywhere is much easier to get to AND a pleasure to get to with a boat or plane, or even simply flying unaided. From my point of view, Seacliff is much more fun to visit. You can see it from so many new perspectives now that you couldn't before. I flew over the island and then looped back and cruised by at water level. It was so much more real. No boundaries. Total freedom of movement. I can totally feel for the loss of privacy and sense of remoteness that the resident's of Seacliff and others', in similar affected areas, have experienced. Please take some time to see what you are gaining from this evolution of The Grid. I think that it is a good thing. The world seems a bit more complete to me. More real. p.s. Eh, forget what I said. Your sim fps is worse than Grignano's now. _____________________

p.s. Eh, forget what I said. Your sim fps is worse than Grignano's now. I havn't been in Grignano for a while, but... Our sim FPS dropped overnight from an average of 1200-1500 to an average of 200. This is unnecceptable. I *like* the void sims conceptually. And I've even gotten over my objection to connecting Seacliff to Federal... But the FPS drop is unbearable. We've even tried shutting off as much of our scripting as we can to no effect. It is purely the effect of the void sims. Even Natoma, who only touches a void sim now on one *corner*, experienced a drop in FPS that was noticable to its residents. |
