Hunter S. Thompson dead at 67

I admit I'm no die-hard fan, but I've always been fond of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I remember opening the book and reading the opening line"The drugs took effect by the time we reached Barstow" and thinking, whoa! this is something new!

Too bad he's gone.

i can't help but wonder what thought patterns swam about in ol' Hunters' head when he decided to send that proverbial bucket flying..

i never read much of his work, i saw both versions of the famous film though.. both "Fear and Loathing..." and "Where the Buffalo Roam".

the man was different.. a shining example of how life can be for someone who just follows their own path. he made enemies by speaking his mind, but he made his friends in the same exact manner.. i'm sure.

i always feel a dark cloud gather in mourning of anyone who passes that has given some sort of intellectual and/or creative gift to the world.

That's sad. :(

Although I have read Hell's Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, I think I will miss the occasional article with that nearly surreal ethic that he called "Gonzo", more so.

One article said he was in pain due to some injury or operation, so that may have contributed to his choice.

My heart just dropped in my stomach.

Thompson is one of my favorite writers, bar none. I'm very saddened by losing him, but I have to say I'm not suprised at the way he chose to make his exit - he never struck me as a man who would lie down and let death take him whenever it felt like it.

Time to break out Fear and Loathing for the 435th reading. Oh, and I wish I hadn't picked yesterday to quit smoking cigarettes.

Salut, Dr. Thompson!

WOW that is so fucked up. One of my favorites as well. I had the exact same feeling when I learned that Spalding Gray killed himself. REALLY TRAGIC! :(

Years ago I'd buy a magazine just to read something published by him. Today, Fear & Loathing and Rum are my two favorite books. In fact, Rum is in my bag for the track, something "light" to read between the motorcycle races. I remember being in the pits and setting my book down only for a moment (beverage refill) only to come back and find someone reading it. By the end of the race day there were a bunch of us chatting and laughing about stories of his. It amazed me at the variety of people who were fans. Even if you didn't appreciate his personal lifestyle, you had to respect him for saying so well what everyone was thinking.

Fear And Loathing (the book, not the film) is utter genius. As is much of his other work, but it was Fear And Loathing that first introduced me to Hunter S. Thompson. I read it from start to finish in one sitting, hooked totally, not able to put it down even to go to the toilet.

I can think of only one other book that has had such an effect on me and that was Vurt by Jeff Noon.

The doctor will be missed.
