Hi, folks. I've just started a new group for people involved with or interested in academic projects in SL. Group name is Alma Mater. If you're interested, join us.
So what I'm looking for is pointers to any and all academic groups or projects you know of. We're planning to create a tourbook that will have landmarks to all the places we can find. I know of the new psych and social science building, my own First Shift Project just starting in Pickerel, the Librarium, and a schizophrenia demo building. Any more pointers to academic type projects/people/places/things?
Any good ideas for this group?

What do you mean exactly by "academic project"?

academic projects

any projects that are educational in nature and that are educational on topics that have been, might be, could be, and/or should be studied in schools, colleges, universities, academies of learning. Traditional topics could include: literature, psychology, history, and all the rest that you already know. Less traditional topics could include lots of stuff, like the information at the parrot rescue station, etc etc.
Know of any places?

Ah, when I read the title, I thought this was about doing academic research studies in SL (e.g. studying collaboration in virtual communities).
Maybe you should include places where teaching SL stuff is the primary purpose (like USL and the ivory tower)?

Could you be a little more specific, and a little less rambling?

Sure, I can try

Sure, I can try. There are some academic/educational projects in second life. I am interested in finding as many of them as possible and listing them in a document that can then be distributed to others who are also interested. This document would have landmarks so that SLers can go to these places and visit them. Some of these projects that I have already seen and would include on such a list are:
The Librarium The Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Center First Shift The Philosopheum The Museum on Parrot Island Virtual Hallucination
What these areas have in common is that they are each designed with an educational theme. That is as clear and non-rambling as I care to get. Feel free to suggest more places. Feel free to join Alma Mater if you're interested in these sorts of projects and want to talk about them, create them, organize them.

So you're only interested in cataloging projects that are tied to some real life academic field and/or formal educational or research entity (college, university, R&D group, etc.)? This would, I assume, preclude any educational projects that pertain to SL-exclusive subjects, such as the Ivory Tower of Prims which teaches SL residents how to use the in-world building tools. (I'm guessing that this is the source of confusion, i.e., exactly what you consider to be "educational."
