A Lack of Common Courtesy

It amazes me sometimes the basic lack of respect and common courtesy that people exhibit in world. Is it because of the ability to be anonymous.. or are these same individuals annoying twits in real life too?

The following is a conversation I had recently. The name of the individual has been removed, since it is required. Peer pressure seems to be our only tool, so I think that's a shame. I have inserted Nameless Twit instead. Feel free to IM me in world if you would like to know more.

For those who don't know, Ferran and I have set aside a portion of Chaos to be a shop. We don't charge rent, but it is invitation only, and we do have a waiting list. During a recent walk through, I found that Nameless Twit had set up a vendor in the space reserved for a new designer.

Surreal Farber: Nameless Twit... why do you have a vendor in our shop in Chaos?
Nameless Twit: Do you own that land?
Nameless Twit: :P>>>>>>>>
Surreal Farber: yes Ferran and I do, and we want to know why you put up a vendor here without asking us
Nameless Twit: for the hell of it
Nameless Twit: set your land next time..
Nameless Twit: i gotta keep you ppl in check <<<??>?>?<<?<<? YA

I don't know if we are the store owners who have had this problem. But I know there is no excuse for this kind of behavior. I've thought that if you wouldn't do it in RL, then you should think twice about doing it here. Just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you should.

But then again.. Nameless Twit may be the same kind of person who throws beer cans in your yard and lets their dog crap in it.

Blech; I know the type exactly, Surreal. Most of my land isn't set to auto-return (for various reasons), and I've had problems with this, too. Usually I just return or delete items without contacting the offending party who placed them on my land. I figure it's not worth my time and energy to deal with parasites who try to leech whatever they can off others; it's usually impossible to shame them, and I don't need the downer of confronting them only to be called names or neg-rated. Also, if you just delete or return items, chances are they won't notice; if you contact them, they might re-visit you and place the vendor there again... and I'm not sure that's an offense covered under an abuse report.

I found a fully constructed house on my back lot about a week ago, complete with furnishings, decorations, a patio with chairs scattered around. Looked like the squatters had been there a while. I almost felt guilty returning it all... almost. I didn't bother to IM the person. I figured a couple hundred objects returning to their inventory would be a sufficient expression of my sentiments. I'd like to think they just didn't know any better, but it's not very likely :p

Nameless twit is an obvious asshole who doesn't deserve to be in SL.

My only neg is from a case like this, where the I found someone building on my land. They were just as smart-alecky about it when I asked what they were doing. They were shocked that I would have a problem with it, since I had allowed it to happen with my land settings. When I set my land to auto-return, they negged me saying that I should be more polite.

And this wasn't a n00b, but one of the more respected people in the game. Featured on several pages of the SL site, in fact.

Surreal, I trust you used the land tools to ban this twit from your Island?

Well its fairly obvious that the person in question did it to be a total gobshite about it. If it was an accident or if they were dumb it would be one thing. Said person comes across as an asshat in their response.

To add to the lack of common courtesy How much support am I supposed to provide for a free item? I make a free TV for the newbie freebie pile at the club I work at. It's so simple even the newest of newbies can operate it. I just spent 20 mins telling this girl how to do it over and over and she finally got it then she started pestering me about putting a picture frame around it and all sorts of stuff. She wasn't even a newbie. Been here since November and expected me to take more of my time to fix a perfectly usable free Item for her.

Yup, Maeve, that's why I retired. Too many clueless idiots wanting stuff for free or cheap, or just wanting way too much of me. This is supposed to be fun.
Well, I dont see how anyone could have fun as a tech support monkey.
So now I only make stuff for myself or for friends.

I find items for sale in my shops all the time. Lately, I have had alot of other people's games in my casinos.
I now neg rate instantly for this.

The most gutsy placement has to be the store owner that placed a teleporter to their store, in the middle of one of my hub stores w/ a sign advertising their store. That one made me laugh.

Hee, you should've replaced that one with an exact duplicate, that would instead teleport the user into a reasonable facsimile of a cesspool. :D

In the past, when I logged, my first task was to fly around Chase's Manhattan to delete the crap people left behind. One griefer enjoyed unlinking physical objects on my land. Finding all the pieces was a pain. Another repeatedly left tiny, invisible sound generators.

Then I discovered squatters living in my premium apartments without paying. They were quite rude when I confronted them.

Also, I was repeatedly particle bombed. The more recent particle generators seemed to self-delete when I came close enough to find them.

Fixing all this took a lot of effort. Friends helped me set group on thousands of prims. I turned on auto-return. I didn't see any other way.
