What's a fetid?
It is believed that many thousands of years ago, our early ancestors began to advance from primal grunts and hisses to structured communication; using a common vocabulary, one (proto-)human could convey to another an idea or an emotion with far greater precision than with frantic gesticulation.

With the development of writing and reading, basic literacy could enable a person to explore new realms of thought, and to record experiences for the advancement of her fellow humans. Now ideas could become permanently fixed in the human consciousness, with great accuracy, no longer relying on the capacity or somewhat-fallible integrity of human memory.

As languages became more complex, and thusly more powerful, it occurred to some humans that it might not be possible to know the correct (that is, commonly accepted) spelling and meaning of every word in the language. These clear-minded inviduals struck upon a simple, yet clever idea: they would create a compendium of all words both in the present vernacular, and also those used more historically. This book was given the name lexicon, but it is most often called a dictionary in the present. Using the dictionary, individuals who were unfamiliar with a particular word, phrase, or term could look up its definition, provided the individuals already possessed at least a shred of literacy.

Although some comprehensive dictionaries can be fairly expensive, it is possible to obtain abridged "light" dictionaries that are more than adequate for most people. It was inevitable that the opening of the Internet to the public would spawn at least one online dictionary, but in fact, many have turned up, and most are free.

Once you have obtained a traditional paperbound dictionary, you should familiarize yourself with its structure. In English, the entries in the dictionary are organized alphabetically. Finding a word is a mere matter of turning to the section that matches the first letter of the word, then refining your search with each successive letter. Often-times, it is possible to find the word you want even if you don't know its precise spelling.

If you have access to the Internet, and in particular, the World Wide Web, you may use a search engine to find a dictionary site, and enter your query at the site for near-instant results.

In conclusion, the dictionary is a truly remarkable idea, and those who use it find satisfaction in the ability to communicate not only effectively, but eloquently.

Well, clearly you know better than me what one ought to do with one's time. Why don't you share it with the rest of the class? :p

Anyway, can you tell me what satire means? I'm dying to find out. ;)

Awww... too bad the Thought Police discovered your hijinks before I had a chance to read your post. Was it a more succinct version of my (admittedly) belaboured suggestion? :D
