As desperately as I want to name names, I will try very hard not to do so. I am sure Pathfinder will be keeping a close eye :)

There is a sim, owned by someone who is away from SL at the moment. He and his partner have provided a haven and some of us have been fortunate enough to be able to live there, rent free. We have been asked to limit prims in our places to about 200 which I think is very generous.

One of the residents has decided to create up in the sky, a huge building which must be many hundreds of prims. It appears to be part of a business.

Despite the owner's partner requesting that this be removed he has had no reply to his IM. He has asked LL for assistance, but since the owner has failed to give him the permissions needed, before his departure, LL will do nothing.

If this happened to you, in similar circumstances, how would you deal with it?

I am neither the owner, nor the partner, but your suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you

Alexa

I should add that the person concerned is also a resident and housing is provided by the owner.

Consider moving. That's really the only way to have any control over your environment, and even then sometimes it's sketchy. If you've already tried speaking to the guy, and he's been unresponsive, chances are there's not much you can do to change his mind. And even if he removes what's there now, he could throw something else up the following week.

So much of the annoyances in SL are land and neighbour related. I would take my time, look for a spot in an established sim with good neighbors and then buy a largish plot. It worked for me.

You say the owner is away for the moment. What does "away for the moment" mean? If the owner will be returning soon this will be a non-issue on the owner's return. (of course "soon" is also a very subjective term)

If the owner won't be coming back soon, can the partner contact the owner? If so, does the owner have the ability to email LL or otherwise contact LL and request that they assist with this problem? (not that LL may come up with another excuse for not helping)

I'm assuming everyone belongs to the same group. If this is the case and the owners partner is an officer of the group the partner can kick the offender....getting rid of the build is a tough one though....

Sadly, the other posters who have noted that the only way to have control over the SL land you choose to inhabit is to buy it yourself are absolutely right. It might seem like a solution to kick the offender out of the group (if possible), but will that anger the owner of the land when he returns? It seems like the only clear solutions you have in this case are to wait it out or leave the island.

If you decide to wait it out, you should ask the owner, when he returns, what he would like tenants to do if another instance like this crops up. That way at least you will know his wishes regarding how other tenants (and his partner) should proceed. Good luck.

announce a tennants meeting when the person with the uglee build is on .. strongly urge that person to attend (hold on the floor of his/her build mebe) ..

and then tell everyone to say what they dont like and dont like about living there.

i expect the build will come up.

------

hmm maybe make a lot of "Please Take down, you are over your prim limit" signs and placing them all over the build would also be an idea.

Negrate him. He's sucking prims up out of the group over the limit established by the owner -- very bad behaviour. Neg on behaviour, and neg on build for sucking prims. Appearance -- well, that's gilding the lily.

Negrates are a great way to open a conversation with people who won't answer IMs.

Bringing it to the forums in a thinly disguised manner like this can work...or it can pour gasoline when a negrate might have worked better, especially if collectively done by all the ppl on the sim.

Obviously this person who left for awhile had a partner that he didn't give the perms too, i.e. officer status with the right to return prims.

He may have done that because it's very hard to trust even the closest people, they will likely screw you when land and real-life money are involved.

Well, the moral of the story is, rent, because it's cheaper than buying land that might go ugly on you, and be hard to control anyway. If something changes, you leave.
