Most cars (real cars) are available in different trim levels. You buy the base package, you get a 4cyl engine and a manual transmission. You pay a bit more, you get a V6 and optionally an automatic transmission. As the customer, you balance what features you want against how much money you are willing (and/or able) to pay.
What do you think about the idea of vehicles being sold like this? Would you like to see a vehicle with basic features for a low price, with an option to buy (or upgrade to) the more feature-rich version for a certain fee?

Myself, I've always believed in having one version.
Software/SL is not like creating a "real" car. The only way you have different trim levels is to strip out/cripple one version of your creation, for a reduced price. (eg. Windows XP Home/Pro)
I see this a lot. While I admit it's probably the way to go to maximize sales revenue, I tend to look down on this practice. Mostly, it's philosophical - I don't like the idea of cripple-ware.

i get occassional requests for cutomized versions of plants. i just build a copy that way for that person at the time. it gives them a litle personal service and, sometimes, i end up with a resellable product. usually it's not something the general public would want to purchase though. i can't imagine trying to give everybody that shopped at fate gardens in taber the ability to customize plants several different ways. it would make the park look dumpy and be confusing for both them and me.
my postrambling point is that i think you and your customers will be much happier working together to produce custom versions of cars when they were requested. form a customization group, hire mechanics and build a whole virtual industry out of it omg i sound like philip.

Idunno. I thought about the whole "crippleware" argument, but on the other side is the argument of paying for the features you need/want. The majority of people don't really need Win XP Pro, so they get Home, and it does everything they need it to.
From my point of view, it will maximize sales, but on a low-ticket item, and will also require that I either handle upgrades manually (which I'd rather not) or build a system to do it (which requires more work.) I also have to maintain two versions of the same thing in all my vendors. So it is only worth the hassle if there is significant demand. If there isn't, I will just sell the product in one trim level, even if it means losing a few sales due to the higher price.
