Reading Foolish Frosts well written tale of arrival into Second Life stirred some vague memories of trying SL before there was a Welcome Island. I think I tried Second Life a while back, not sure how long ago.
I seem to recall some sort of building with a 3D map and maybe some terminals. I believe I was on a slow computer with a low memory graphics card because I could barely move. I remember trying hard to figure out what to do and then someone inviting me to something but not being able to get there. And then I gave up.
Was I having a bad dream or a reaction to some other stimuli? Does anyone remember this?

Yeah, I do. And that's why when I came to second life like 18 months ago, I flew around a little, choppily, looked at some stuff, then left and went back to TSO. LOL.

From: Prokofy Neva Yeah, I do. And that's why when I came to second life like 18 months ago, I flew around a little, choppily, looked at some stuff, then left and went back to TSO. LOL. The welcome island (Orientation Island) was in place when I started in Sept 2003.

That must have been a very long time ago. I started 2 years ago this month, and I don't recall a 3D map. I started on what they used to call Prelude Island, and on my 2nd night, I made my way to the mainland. The Welcome Area consisted of a series of signs, the Event Board (made obsolete with 1.1) and a couple of marked paths. That was it. Also, there was not a soul around to welcome newbies.
Edit: I missed the Newbie Corral by a few weeks, I think. It did not exist when I arrived.

I was born into the Newbie Corral. There were two other Welcome Areas after the original Newbie Corral that didn't use Eden/Prelude/Orientation Island/Welcome Island/Newbie Island.
I don't remember a 3d map, but, there was a large sign (kind of green, I think) that pointed in all different directions, at various points of interest in the general area. Also, it was a few feet away from Avatar Central.

The island was named Prelude when I was born. It did have a building with a map of sorts, but it wasnt 3d, it was just the normal map you find on telehubs, though quite a bit smaller. Taken from http://slmaps.com/oldmaps.htm :
