With all this talk about Religion (both in the forums and through other forms of media), I got to thinking about the "God Module" today. I remember this was a very big theory in the late nineties, asserting that religious beliefs are an evolutionary 'module' in the brain to lower anxiety about our own awareness of mortality (yours, anyway, I don't plan to die, EVER! :D ).

Anyway, I tried to google it today, and all I could find were propaganda peices on it. From BOTH sides. Athiestempire.com , as one could imagine, has a very different view on it than science-spirit.org .....but I haven't been able to find any articles on it that quote any research papers on the subject; they mainly seem to be poorly written sourcless articles rambling on.

Does anyone know what's happened with this theory, or even better, have a link to some hard scientific information about it?

Thanks so much.

I vaguely remember something of that nature but do not remember any specifics.

These are very sad times to be an American but where is the rage among the citizenry? Where are the flag wavers who so laud the freedoms symbolized by a flag and written by quill pens in our constitution? Why are we not rallying in the streets against this sort of attrocity? Why because we are gluttonous lazy bastards who say it won't happen to me so who cares. --Ishtar Pasteur

Taco, I don't have a link but I think you're talking about Dr Dean Hamer of America's National Cancer Institute who published his research under 'The God Gene: How Faith is Hardwired Into our Genes'.

The gene apparently doesn't make you more religious, just more ready to believe and accept things that can't be demonstrated. He says that people he found this gene in were equally likely to believe in UFOs and The Loch Ness monster as they were in God.

Hope it helps!
