I have seen a lot of models of planets around SL lately and it got me to thinking about the real scale of them. I worked out a scale for SL and the vastness of our solar system hit me again. I havent thought about it in awhile, hehe.

Anyway, if 10,000km in the real world = 1m in SL, Earth would be 0.128m in diameter. Jupiter is the largest at 1.408m diameter and Pluto is the smallest at .023m diameter. The attached pic shows the planets to scale, along with a default cube for reference.

But, this is where it gets wild. To place these scale planets in world, we need the Sun as a starting point. The Sun would be 140.0m in diameter!

I then discovered our solar system wont fit in SL I measured the mainland and the greatest distance (in a straight line) is from NW Iris to SE Picnic, which is 11132m. Earth would be placed 1460m away from our model sun and Jupiter is the last planet that would fit in SL, being 74100m from the Sun. In order to include Pluto, SL will have to increase in size about seven times since it would be 740000m away from the Sun.

I like the models of the solar system I have seen around SL, I didnt do this to take away from those at all. I was just curious how big the solar system really was. By the way, I know I have too much time on my hands.

what about smaller planet and sun models?

10,000km = 1m was just easy to work with. At this scale, Pluto is .023m in diameter and I think the smallest you can make a prim (through normal means) is .010m. If you want to work out another scale that works, knock yourself out :D
