Just a definitions thread for some people, hell most people that have trouble with definitions of words... any words, large or small...

To Flame

Flame Originally, flame meant to carry forth in a passionate manner in the spirit of honorable debate. Flames most often involved the use of flowery language and flaming well was an art form. Electronic communications lack the the clues given by the body or voice in more personal methods of communication, are are therefore much more easily misunderstood. More recently flame has come to refer to any kind of derogatory comment no matter how witless or crude. See also: Flame War

Flame War

When an online discussion degenerates into a series of personal attacks against the debators, rather than discussion of their positions. A heated exchange.

aha! But what is the souce of THAT definiton? You? and what makes YOU the authority? :) hmmmm?? ;)

And if you say someone else is the authority, who made them so?

you see, flaming is an artform which must be raised to the status of classical rhetoric before it truly receives the attention and adulation that flamers themselves deserve.

I propose a Nobel Prize for flaming!!!

I see your boredom and raise you a 'mind numbing'

Mind Numbing:

(1) What these forums have become lately.
(2) The opinions of various posters on these forums.
(3) My job. Hence my being on these mind numbing forums all the time.

/me was once a

swabbie
one who makes the dubious choice of becoming a seaman wherein - in olden times - one would routinely be forced to "swab down"/mop the decks of salt water...an absolutely pointless task when one considers the environment in which sailing ships would sail...salt water oceans!!!

/me hates mops aka swabs... except for use in ears... swabs that is, not mops.

These are very sad times to be an American but where is the rage among the citizenry? Where are the flag wavers who so laud the freedoms symbolized by a flag and written by quill pens in our constitution? Why are we not rallying in the streets against this sort of attrocity? Why because we are gluttonous lazy bastards who say it won't happen to me so who cares. --Ishtar Pasteur

troll

v.,n. 1. [From the Usenet group alt.folklore.urban] To
utter a posting on Usenet designed to attract predictable
responses or flames; or, the post itself. Derives from the phrase
"trolling for newbies" which in turn comes from mainstream
"trolling", a style of fishing in which one trails bait through a
likely spot hoping for a bite. The well-constructed troll is a post
that induces lots of newbies and flamers to make themselves look
even more clueless than they already do, while subtly conveying to
the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact a deliberate
troll. If you don't fall for the joke, you get to be in on it. See
also YHBT. 2. An individual who chronically trolls in sense 1;
regularly posts specious arguments, flames or personal attacks to a
newsgroup, discussion list, or in email for no other purpose than to
annoy someone or disrupt a discussion. Trolls are recognizable by
the fact that the have no real interest in learning about the topic
at hand - they simply want to utter flame bait. Like the ugly
creatures they are named after, they exhibit no redeeming
characteristics, and as such, they are recognized as a lower form of
life on the net, as in, "Oh, ignore him, he's just a troll." 3.
[Berkeley] Computer lab monitor. A popular campus job for CS
students. Duties include helping newbies and ensuring that lab
policies are followed. Probably so-called because it involves
lurking in dark cavelike corners.
