Ok, here's a question from everyone, what video game would SL be, if Phillip was the players, and we were all the characters inside of it? I tend to see SL as Populous. Phillip is a "diety", we're his followers, and he's raising and lowering land, causing disasters, converting apposed followers to his side, and creating new habbitable land for us to inhabit. As for the apposing diety, I always invision it as TSO or There Thank god Phil's a kind diety and doesn't unleash too many disasters in game Hmm, what's everyone else thing?

Others use Second Life as a game of Therapy, and sometimes that can be hard on the rest of us.

I think some are being a little too hard on the powers that be. I may have agreed with you shortly after the dot com crash, but I really think this is a dream shared by Phillip, Cory, Robin and lot of SLers. If it's wrong to dream and be successful at the same time count me in.

My take: The Lindens are wizards who invented (and maintain) a way cool toy.

Well, there's several precursors from earlier years that come to mind for me, and point the way to what SL has really become -- and materialized as this wonderful collective experience for a lot of us. Here are some names: -SimCity and sequelsgoes without saying, like Populous in the "world creation" or "sandbox"-type game category -Virtus VRonce wanted to use this to design a house, never got around to it. A 3D program centered around easy-access architecture -Deus Ex MMORPGthis was never an actual title, but I am a YUGE fan of this series and suggestions for a MMORPG version set in the same universe were tossed around. I can't relate to current cyberpunk MMORPGS (not even MxO) because they either take place in too distant a future (making it postpostpostetccyberpunk) or they just have a storyline that doesn't appeal to me. Funnily enough, even without combat, the creativity of SL resounds heavily with me in this department. -Game of Lifethe board game. Eh.
