Check out this pic of the new Airbus A380 I found: Link To really pick up the scale of this beast, look down at the right landing gear and you'll see a group of people down there (one of them has a red umbrella). Amazingly, the tires are almost as tall as the people! First flight is in a few months, and I can't wait to see it in the skies.

Not at the moment...just 747 and 777. The only new Boeing in the works is the 7E7 (probably going to be renamed the 787 soon), however, that's not going to be two decks or anything, it's mostly going to be a replacement for the 757/767 lines that are shutting down (or so I think). I love reading www.airliners.net...lots of cool pics of the A380 and great aviation forums.

I read somewhere the other day that a couple of airports (Dulles and LAX, I think) were actually planning new construction to accomodate this monster. Dual level jetways to quickly board passengers. Imagine the wait to board 500 people on one plane...

Yeah, but we have more resourceful engineers here in Second Life. I'd like to see Airbus build that puppy with only 31 prims. - Ace

There was an in-development Boeing competitor to this beast a few years ago when I worked there. It got cancelled because the plane is SO big it would require a new jetway boarding infrastructure at airports (or else would take an incredible amount of time for people to board). Boeing couldn't get enough advance orders to make their version worthwhile.
Airbus is subsidized by the French government so they can gamble on things like this without risking the company.

I believe JFK is going to be putting in new jetways, too. I hope that BA buys a few A380s, I have a lot of miles with them I wanna use.
This thing is gonna hold over 600 people...imagine if they made one all coach/economy seating? It'd probably hold 800+ people. That's a really scary thought.

Airbus is subsidized by the French government so they can gamble on things like this without risking the company. This will definately be interesting. Airbus is placing a huge bet on the A380. If it doesn't do well for them, the company will be in bad shape. Boeing, OTOH, is betting on the new 7E7 (aka Dreamliner). Personally, I'm voting for the 7E7... it has some pretty cool, if insignificant improvements: bigger windows (!) and increased humidity, as well as 20% better fuel consumption than similar wide-body airplanes. The A380 will be cool simply for its immense size.
