Bluntly STFU about telling people to STFU

Geeze. Why are people so against other people speaking out. Do you all like censorship or something? Some topics need to be talked about. If you want to suppress the various topics that you don't agree with, maybe YOU should STFU.

telling people to shut up isn't censorship. if it is then you need to stop censoring people.

I agree with you. In any given issue, all of us have a right to speak, as unpopular as said opinion may be, as many sides are there are. The tricky and slippery slope though is that telling someone to shut the fuck up is not censoring them - deleting their post is.

People try to characterize dissent as whining, tell people to STFU, etc. I prefer to let people speak freely, and to respond in turn to what they've said, even if I don't like it or can't stand them. People hang themselves far more on their own words than they do by not speaking up. I like the give enough rope to hang approach. To each their own, some people prefer to just tell others to shut up instead of offering anything themselves, but again, that is their right too. That's the lovely thing about all these "rights" we talk about. You can say whatever you like, however that does not mean someone will not in turn react to what you have said, or that what you say or do are not without consequences, even if it is just being told to STFU.

Hank, I have to start by saying that I have always had a really high opinion of you. I remember a couple of cool things you did for me when I was a n00b too. I don't tend to take things personaly unless they are blatently addressed that way, however, the way in which you titled this thread tends to make me think you meant that comment to my address.

To which I respond. The right to speak freely includes the right to say STFU when you are sick to death of something. It is NOT bullying to do so unless you add some sort of coercion on top of it. Bullying also implies a stronger person beating up on a weaker person. Which I do not do, and I have never done. It is also not mob action if a number of other people express their support for a STFU.

If your intent was not to call me a bully, I would appreciate some clarification.

Damien, I know you were kidding. Surreal, sorry but I just saw a thread telling people to STFU and had to respond, and it was just more than that thread. In other threads, people want to tell others to only say nice things, to only talk about positive things. I disagree with that assertion. Some people say that because they genuinely are tired of people bickering or whining about a subject. Some people use it to stifle discourse. As usual, I went a little bit too far and included everyone in the slam and I didnt' intend to include people who were probably justified in saying that "I've heard enough discussion about this single topic that has had 1000+ posts about it and no additional resolution". I just saw the words STFU and went with it.

If you don't like what someone has to say and feel it's harmful or negative or somehow just wrong, report him/her to the Lindens and/or mute their posts. Ultimately it's the Lindens who make the decisions about what's appropriate or inappropriate on forums.

I think this form of communication sucks. Message boards are not really a good way to do what we do here. You lose a lot of meaning in text, and if you guys do what I do, you write out what you are thinking as you think it. I should probably spend more time composing my posts instead of just writing them out and clicking the post button. There is no one person to blame for this, but it is a fact that this is not as good as talking.

Having said that, it really seems to me like some people go out of their way to be assholes on this board. It's hard to say if it is on purpose or if it's just a limitation of the format. But if it's on purpose, I sure wish they would just shut the fuck up already.

And for the record to anyone who may be thinking I'm one of the assholes, I do apologize. I mean almost everything I say in jest, and I certainly don't really want to offend anyone. Even Mac users.
