Actually 3d printers have been around for a while now. Can't handle mutiple materials nor can it make objects with small moving parts....

More interesting is some of the work that's being done with nanotech prototypes. There was an article a while back (sorry, can't find the link) about an MIT team working in France. Creations include a muscle that can act as synthetic muscle, that could be worn as a sleeve over weakened joints, for example. The material was assembled with an MEMS assembly that gave the assembly a reasonable degree of molecular precision. In short, from the description... the material is made with a crude, single substance capable nanocompiler.

T'ain't a replicator, but it's a start.
