Why grief ?

I dont think I understand why someone would come to SL to grief. There are so many games out there that are based around killing, and PVP, and random violence. Why not go to those worlds where havok is meant to be.

My reason for posting this is because when I logged into SL today, I was at my club, not much was happening, so I tele'd back to my penthouse on (edited). Now, this is like a paradise out there, nothing but friendly people, dancing, having fun, and enjoying everything (edited) has to offer. I see some green dots on the mini map so I fly over to see if its neighbors or someone needing help. Then all of a sudden there is this big blue ball in my face. I stop and click on it, read the contents and find a scroipt named TRAP something. Look at the owner, (edited), nope this guy dont live here so I IM (edited), tell her about it, shes says she will be right there. Meanwhile, while Im waiting for (edited), I see another object laying on the ground, its owned by (edited) from (edited), says its a grenade. I unclick it and boom, Im blown into the air, haha real funny. But no true harm done. So (edited) shows up and she speaks with a Linden, the Linden shows up right about the time I find yet another grenade and blows us all up. So... where there is 1, there turns out to be 2, so if theres 2 how many more are there ???

750+ objects belonging to these people, all traps and grenades. Wow, now how funny do you suppose that is. If I were the owner of (edited) Id be ashamed of someone like that doing what they are doing, wearing my tag. Just a heads up.

So again, I ask, why grief here ? Is it just a hate thing ? Anyone have any answers for this ?

Firstly, naming people even if they did grief is against TOS and more than likely the names will be edited out eventualy.

Anyway, the question, my answer guess would be...

Maybe its the creativity in which you can grief, your typical game only allows you to do things or grief within a way. But in SL you can make whatever you want to grief with.

People get bored, some take it out in creative ways that don't negatively effect others, some take it out in whatever way they can without regard to how it will effect others. Some people like pissing off others and getting attention.

Theres all different kinds of people in the world, and as SL grows and expands these people will find their way here.

Some people also consider SL a game, their concept of a game may involve grenades, when SL doesn't provide these grenades automaticly they get bored, so they find them or make them theirselves, then of course you have to USE these grenades or else its pointless, no ones in Jessie or either you don't know/care about Jessie, so you go where there are people.

My problem is, I can understand why people grief, I just don't like it. :P

From their perspective, you are griefing them because you think their grenades are lame.

I suspect it is attention. They have no talent that can be used in a positive manner so they go for infamy via foul deeds. Im glad to see the names edited from the opening thread topic, naming the party involved only increases their name recognition and helps their efforts.

Yes. Don't worry or complain about fucktards ruining your SL experience! We've got a button! Of course, in addition to being a poorly implemented tool that is of little use in practice to most land owners who collaborate in any way or run a store, given numerous other restrictions that make it relatively redundant, it also automatically cures all ills, instantly relieves any stresses incurred and provides instant justice. STOP WHINING YOU PUSSIES! You have a button that completely negates griefing and all consequences thereof! Jeebus!

You know what is funny? From all the many games my friends and I played, the game with least griefing was a game fully centered around unlimited player vs player.

I think griefers are little loosers who only enjoy if their victims are upset. So they don't go where the real competition and pvp fighting is because they get beaten there quickly, but to places where they can annoy people who like peaceful gameplay. And SL is great place for them in this respect.

Is there a button I can press to return unwanted posts?

I quite agree. In my own experience with griefers in other games, it's always when it demands them the least effort that they're "active". As soon as griefing requires them to take annoyting time, then they stop. Sure it's not a golden rule, but when annoying other people is actually an annoyance to you... you stop, no? ;) ("You"=general you here of course, hehe)

That's interesting Eggy because I always thought it takes 2 to greif. One person to rez and imaginary grenade, and another to SPAZZ OUT.

so not cool!

Being griefed in any way, shape or form is NOT cool. Yes, we have a "return" button but when you are so lagged from the griefers objects and/or you have other objects on your parcel that you can't have returned at that time for whatever reason that leaves you in quite a bind (ty for pointing that out Kris), that button's not always so helpful.

Actually..naming people is not against the TOS. Personal attacks and posting personal converstion logs are against forum rules however. You can name all the people you want as long as it's not a personal attack.

I'm disappointed though. I would have liked to see you respond to this facetious dismissal of the original post! There is plently more sarcasm that can be easily be dripped over that little gem, Jellin! Give it a go. hehe

In DragonRealms they set up a separate grid where the ToS wasn't enforced. When griefers inevitably got banned, they had to go there to play; but they didn't stay long, because when they tried their shenanigans they got their butts kicked.

It turns out that griefers depend on the ToS to protect them from retribution.

Now it also turns out that in this game you can crank your level way up using scripting, but it's against ToS. In this alternate grid, everyone does this and is up to level gazillion. The interesting part is that there has developed a kind of code of honor that says that you've got to give new people time to level up before challenging them. All completely enforced by the players themselves.

The vast majority of people here are intelligent, decent, and committed to making SL a great place to be. Shackling all of them to control a small minority of troublemakers may in fact be aggrevating the problem.
