Ugh, This is not the way to welcome There players. The ugly monetary aspects of SL. Land and making money in-world. Yes building is mentioned but this makes me go yuck, especially after what There players have gone through with TBUX. Quote is from the welcome There link from the SL home page.

Second Life is an online digital world, built, shaped and owned by its participants. Second Life is different from other online worlds in that Residents can own land, create and script nearly anything they can imagine with no approval process and have numerous opportunities to make real money in-world.

I agree that the last line focuses on the rather nasty side of SL when you get right down to it. Kinda misleading in a way too... But it is a fact there are several different ways you could make rl money here.

I sincerely hope that they are really just trying to emphasize they do give back to the players with incentives & such. But the way its worded kind of makes me wonder if they are trying to promote the idea of selling L$ to GOM & IGE too. An idea I've never been to fond of personally.

I dunno, I think this is a pretty good way to attract There players. There are a lot of people in There who make clothes and other objects and are making quite a bit of game money which can be traded for real money. There was a line in a recent article about gaming economies that stated one There clothing designer was making US$3,000-4,000 a month.

In fact, some of the biggest holdouts right now in There who are trying to convince There members to stay are designers. I think this might be partly because they realize they won't be making the big bucks in any other game like they do in There. And of course, the designers have the most to lose because they have put the most time into developing content for the game. I know I would be very unhappy if SL suddenly folded after all the SL clothes I made. But at least I wouldn't feel I was losing "real" money since I'm not making as much as There designers because our prices on goods in SL are much more reasonable.

Be thankful that the SL economy is so much more stable than There's. It's one of the main things that attracted me to SL from There.

As someone who also plays There, and is a designer over there as well. Not all of us are in it for the money. Although there are some that are. The ability to make money is not what attracts me to places such as this and There. It is the relaxation that they provide.
