I live in Vancouver, WA, about 80 miles south of St. Helens; I can easily see the mountain from near my home on a day that is at least mostly clear. We didn't really see any ash fallout around here this evening from the volcano, and it's now dark. I heard on the news that there is a wind from west to east which is pushing much of the ash that erupted this afternoon/evening toward the Yakima, WA area.
I believe that the deaths that occurred after the 1980 eruption of St. Helens were mostly people who refused to leave their homes near the mountain. Seismologists keep a close eye on any volcanic activities these days and usually give plenty of warning in the event of impending danger. We live far enough away that it is next to impossible that any lava flow would reach us; also, since most wind patterns in this area go west to east, not northerly or southerly, we might see less ash down south of St. Helens here than towns hundreds of miles east might see. (Probably incidentally, we're having some beautiful early spring weather here, with temps around 70 degrees fahrenheit this week.) _____________________
