This is a great story in the LA Times about the families who journeyed from Seattle, WA to Irvine, CA to vote. A 22 hour journey. And so American! They are going to cap it off in Disneyland.
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-caravan30jan30.story
"But he's going to vote," says Sadik, whose family came from Baghdad via Syria to Seattle three years ago because her mother wanted the children to have an education, medicines, a future. "He's really excited to vote, so he can live safe with his children. Especially now, after what happened to him. He really wants a better life."
And if he is willing to risk his life to cast a ballot, then her family is willing to make the journey to Irvine.
Sadik and her family also are excited. Friday was for driving. Saturday for voting. And today, before hitting I-5 again for the long trip back home? "We're going to go to Disneyland."

Technically, if they are voting in the Iraqi election, they aren't that American, but somewhat Iraqi. However, driving 22 hours to get to a polling place shows a strong commitment to civic duty, a trait we Americans sorely lack. Sad, isn't it?
On a similar note, several days last week, I noticed a Maryland state trooper parked at the bottom of a Beltway offramp. At the point where the ramp merged with MD 450, there were two more Maryland trooper cars. Further down, there were several Prince George's County police cars parked at the Sheraton. All of these cars had their lights on, and were being very obivious. Apparently, that Sheraton is the east coast polling place for the Iraqi election. Security is very tight in the area. Taking a picture of anything within a mile of the place might get you stopped and searched.

As against the Iraq invasion as I've been, I will say that's it's very cool to see such high turnout at the polls in Iraq. I truly hope it's the first step towards a brighter and more peaceful future for them. Time will tell I guess.

How can we expect the Iraqis to pull off an election without a hitch when we can't do the same ourselves? Bush has already declared the vote a "success". Let's see what the Sunnis think before he starts his victory dance. This election will be a "success" if the end result isn't civil war. Its too early to call. If the government is still in place 10 years from now, we can cautiously call the 2005 vote a success.

From: Eggy Lippmann Let's just hope that the high turnout doesnt mean some people voted twice They are dyeing every voters index finger with indelible ink. There is no way they can vote twice without cutting off a digit. Also makes them great targets for the insurgents. I wonder who thought up that plan. As someone who lives in Irvine, it is a weird honor to be one of only 5 polling places in the entire country.
