Darko and I went on a trip this weekend to celebrate my birthday. We happen to catch 2 fantastic films at the Angelika and I also saw previews for 2 films that are going to be awesome as well. Here are the links to the films we watched.

Is that the new film by Pedro Almodovar?

I am a huge fan of his movies and believe have seen them all. If not, I plan to! :)

I would advise any Antonio Banderas or Penelope Cruz fans to see their early work in Almodovar movies. You'd be surprised in what you see, especially with Antonio...

Paris,

Check out this move review link:

http://www.mrqe.com/lookup

It actually goes out and pulls reviews and ratings from all over the world.

You can see reviews from anyone from Roger Ebert, to the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (yes! the review movies!), to the World Socialist Web Site's review.

Did he do Matador? In any case, Matador is one of my favorite movies.

On a completely different tack, saw a movie yesterday called "Cypher". I liked it a lot: watching it was like the experience you get when you play a new computer game and are unsure what the rules are. This feeling has become something of a Nirvana to me, now that most new games are minor variations on old ones. For this reason alone I found the film fascinating.

Yes, Matador is one of them. Great movie!

Banderas did five movies with Almodovar before he went Hollywood:

Laberinto de Pasiones (Labyrinth of Passions)
Matador
La Ley del Deseo (Law of Desire)
Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown)
Atame! (Tie me up!)

All good too!

Since it's the holiday season, I recommend the anime film Tokyo Godfathers. It's about three homeless persons who find an abandoned infant and set out to find her parents. It has a great hearwarming story and it's very funny.

Just watched Hector Babenco's "Carandiru", about life and ensuing riots at the infamous Sao Paolo Prison. Pretty good. Its available at movielink.com if you can't find it at your video store.

In case you are not familiar with the movies Hector Babenco has directed, you must also check out "Pixote," "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and "At Play in the Fields of the Lord."

I was really jazzed when I heard they were making Constantine. I'd been reading Hellblazer for years, since I got the first issue as a gift. Then I found out it was going to be Keanu Reeves. It makes me feel a little queasy to think about it. "Middle aged, gritty, blonde cockney hermetic magician? Yeah, let's get this Hawaiian surfer guy.."
