http://www.stoplandmines.org From: someone What would you do if you had to worry about landmines every time you went to the store, took a drive in the countryside or went to see your doctor?
That’s the reality for millions of people in about 80 countries. With such large numbers of people affected by landmines in countries that may seem very far away, it’s sometimes easy to forget about the problem.
Landmines may not be in your backyard, but they’re in the backyards of people all over the world. The United Nations is helping dozens of countries end the threat of landmines. You can help too by donating to have a minefield cleared.
The fight against landmines is a fight for the rights of people to live free from fear, in a safe environment conducive to development and peace. Watch the video which American media has refused to put on TV. -Ghoti

http://www.state.gov/t/pm/wra/c11735.htmThe US's main reason for not supporting the Ottawa Convention was that basically the entire border between North and South Korea is mined... That link up there is the new policy that was adopted on Feb 27 2004, it's not perfect but at least it's a step in the right direction.

From: someone A new United Nations campaign designed to get the public involved in the global fight against landmines is apparently too explosive for American television, as it depicts children being blown apart on a soccer field. that might be more why the media won't put it on tv and less some shady government dealings.

We also have hundreds of square miles of mine fields around our facilities in Guantanamo, Cuba.

Landmines are good and a useful tool in warfare. The issue that folks fuss about is getting those landmines picked up after the war has ended. Cause you don't wanna step on a bouncing betty while on your honeymoon stroll theough Vietnam. heheheh But should landmines be banned? No.

I think (hopefully) what Alby was saying is that any tool used for warfare could be potentially banned for being harmful in a non-combat situation.
Mines as a tool for warfare are effective. So are submarines. The problem with mines is that they're easily lost or unaccounted for because they are intentionally obscured and inexpensive. A submarine is obscured but accounted for.

The land mine systems currently used by the US are designed to either self destruct or be rendered inert after a set period of time. The idea is to prevent the tragic loss of life or limb months or years after a conflict. The US Army also within the last 5 years has stopped teaching soldiers tactics involving booby traps and trip mines. Training focus is on how do spot them and avoid them. It’s easy to bitch about how the military does its job and say the US is evil cause we won’t throw away our weapons. Our soldiers deserve the protection that land mine systems offer and I'm glad the US didn’t sign a bullshit treaty preventing there use. The mines blowing up little kids and water buffalo in Cambodia and Vietnam were made in China for use against US troops during the Vietnam War. The ones in Kosovo blowing up little kids and farmers were made in eastern Europe to blow up Muslims. Last I checked China didn’t sign the treaty either. The US spends millions helping victims of land mines, suppling training and equipment to help other countries clear mines. Just because we (the US) didnt sign it dosent mean we dont think the situation is tragic or non-issue.

Well no one had bashed the US for not supporting the Ottowa Convention yet... I just brought it up because it was an important treaty regarding land mine use and disposal.

From: Lianne Marten Why not? Because they are an effective tool for military use. And when it comes to winning a battle or the war, you don't limit your abilities. Just like you don't ban artillery shells because they can often not explode and pose a danger well into the future. These are just the by products of war. Ban them all you want, and when war breaks out the enemy has weapons which you chose to ban, who do you think has the edge? Ever wonder why Fort Detrick is the Army's BioWeapons military base? They don't just study BioWeapons, they learn to weaponize things like Anthrax and such. Once the Genie is released from the bottle, you can't put it back in. And running around with some idea that you can "ban" a weapon of war is foolish and unrealistic thinking. Your chance of banning landmines is about as good as banning Nuclear Weapons. And because of this, its better to spend your time and money trying to locate and remove the remains of war than trying to prevent the tools of war. The money spent to "remove" unused landmines is more effective than money spent to protest their use.

Ahhhh The Good Old Days.. Ehehehehe
CLAIRE Okay, what about you, you hypocrite! Why don't you take Allison to one of your heavy metal vomit parties? Or take Brian out to the parking lot at lunch to get high? What about Andy for that matter, what about me? What would your friends say if we were walking down the hall together. They'd laugh their asses off and you'd probably tell them you were doing it with me so they'd forgive you for being seen with me.
BENDER (furious once again) Don't you ever talk about my friends! You don't know any of my friends, you don't look at any of my friends and you certainly wouldn't condescend to speak to any of my friends so you just stick to the things you know, shopping, nail polish, your father's BMW and your poor--rich--drunk mother in the Carribean!
CLAIRE (furious and sobbing) Shut up!
BENDER And as far as being concerned about what's gonna happen when you and I walk down the hallways at school, you can forget it! 'Cause it's never gonna happen! Just bury your head in the sand...and wait for your fuckin' prom!
CLAIRE I hate you!
BENDER Yeah? Good!
