Umm with the heavy asset loads and constant what seem to be DOS attacks. No wonder that it happened.. Don't you love hackers and others new griefers.
Most sims and SL went poof. (But now are back) _____________________

Sims vanishing, and the server just kicked my butt out of SL.
Myself and others can't get back online, we are stuck at "Preparing Inventory" -- which is the Asset Server that Andrew said was having problems earlier. I had just gotten buff naked to teleport somewhere, and "boom" offline I went. Let's hope that "home" location works, and if not, let me just say this in advance... "Sorry, folks for dropping in on you naked as a jaybird, but the Linden's gave me no choice." ![]() _____________________

Yes just got quicked out.
Another problem I have had as of lately is when I land. I go right through the ground like if it was water. Not every time, but often enough. Well, if the forums are up, it can't be that bad. It is probably still the asset server. I guess I'll go watch some football. -tito _____________________

Have no fear, I landed on Nolan's property. Said my hello's, bathed in the waterfall and headed back home.

Its 2:58pm Pacific and I can still see a black void where Midnight City should be from the roof of my castle in Periwinkle. earlier a huge black mass had ate Hikuelo but apparently the Godzilla sized thing is now eating Midnight City.

You know, seeing as SL is supposed to eventually become totally decentralized... it strikes me as odd that they have only one or two computers running the data management for the entire world.
What a bottleneck. LF _____________________

You know, seeing as SL is supposed to eventually become totally decentralized... it strikes me as odd that they have only one or two computers running the data management for the entire world. What a bottleneck. LF Sorta came up in my mind the other day... I think when SL servers can be far apart it will always be easier to have an asset servers for any cluster. (holding all assets for the cluster) since then everything is in one database.. My real question is how do user's inventories work across clusters, and individual servers (assuming if you have a cluster of 1 the inventory for that server can run on the same machine) Now remember I have nothing to do with LL besides I play the game, but as a computer science student, with plenty of time to procrastinate doing my work I had the following idea: each cluster would theoretically be able to register avs, and it is that clusters responsibility to keep a copy of a users inventory and give it to other servers as requested. Now speaking of databases.. I need to contact my partner in Information Systems and decide on a project of creating some type of database system. |

I'm reminded of The Langoliers... True. RIGHT!!! Well they're all tied in... to an uberverse. But yeah, in the Langoliers... where things seem to be frozen in time, that makes me think of lag and some of the peculiar occurrences. ![]() _____________________

LL does NOT have a single asset server for the whole grid.
Each simulator has its own "asset server" that contains most of the content you see. The central asset server is only used in two situations: 1) When there's a new release, the local cache of every simulator is lost, as they wipe the whole HD and reinstall the new server version. This means that things will get a little slower while it is repopulated. 2) When you rez something that has never been rezzed in that sim before, it has to come from the central asset server. I'm told things are sent from the central asset server over HTTP and cached by a standard squid proxy running on every sim. _____________________
