I've only been in second life for about 4 days now and I have a few questions.

I understand that it is possible to own land, set up a shop, and sell things, and I even know how to make some things, but how do you make an item be "for sale" and allow people to pay you for it?

Also, I want to rent an apartment I guess. I don't think I'm ready to buy land just yet, but I will need money to pay, so if I don't have a shop to sell things, is my only option to get money just to become a dancer or something similar? What do most people do for money?

For awhile, I was able to use the Gestures tab at the bottom of the screen to gesture while chatting with people, but now, when I click on it, nothing happens. It doesn't show my gesture options.

I thought you were supposed to be able to click and drag a gesture to your avatar to make them do it, but that doesn't seem to work.

I guess that's all the questions I have for now. I'd appreciate anyone who wants to take the time to answer. Thanks.

If you have clothing for sale, you can put it inside a basic little box prim, put a preview texture on it, and then set the box for sale by going under the "General" tab in edit mode and ticking "For Sale" and setting whether to sell the original, contents, or a copy. Most people choose contents or copy. Then, there ya go - it's for sale.

Apartment rentals aren't too terribly hard to find - but finding one to fit your budget is the tricky part. Some places offer apartments for free to the landless - but they depend upon you being AT the place for a certain amount of time every day. If you're only looking to set up a store, though, and not looking for a place to really make a home - I'd suggest looking into renting a small stall in a store. There are a couple of places that even have free stalls, I do believe.

If your gestures are no longer working, they may be "deactivated." Open your inventory, and make sure that the gestures in your gestures folder are bold and "active." If they are not, right click them and choose activate. They will then become available in the little dropdown box again, and/or available by any text "triggers" they have been set up for.

If something is marked "for sale", anybody can click on it and select "buy". When they do this, the owner of the object gets the money and they get the object in their inventory.

If the "for sale" object is marked "sell original", then the buyer becomes the owner of that object. If "sell copy", then the get a copy of it in their inventory and the original stays there.

If you can put out an item that is marked for-sale-sell-a-copy, many people can buy copies of it, and you get the money each time. (Make sure you have the rights to sell everything that makes up the object. All the textures, scripts, etc, if any. You always have all the rights to everything you create yourself.)

hope this helps.
