Flaming in the Classifieds

I'm just curious as to why certain people feel the need to flame on people posting in the classifieds. I find this so rude. All these people are doing are creating content and trying to make a SL living like the rest of us. It seems to be happening alot lately and I'm beginning to wonder if I'm the only one that is bothered by this. As a result, I refuse to buy from these people that do this because I don't want to support this type of behavior.

Thanks for listening to my rant for today, Have a great day ya'll!!!

Hmm...well, maybe you won't refuse to sell to them then LOL?

Honestly, which threads are bothering you? The one about Hank Ramos today? With the 16m micro-baron empire? But that's an unconscionable act inciting griefers. If you woke up and found one of those 16m squares next to some of your beautiful parcels filled with a spinning, glowing George Bush, wouldn't you be sad? I know I'd be sad for you.

I totally agree that classifieds should not be discussion forums. The moderators should swifty lock or move such threads that become more than mere announcements. The problem is, with the absence of any kind of Better Business Bureau or Consumer Advocates system in SL, what can you do when someone posts something that really raises interests of concern to the public? Like having to deal with extortionist griefer insurance by having to buy a package of 16m micro-baronlet parcels?

Of course, under their fake notion of public interest, people can and do harass posters there due to their own personal baggage or baggage from other flame wars. I think it's dreadful. We're often the victim of it.

I personally am going to vow to take all discussions in classifies over to general (unless they seem to fit in the other things like polysci). It's just that some things are so awful they cry out for comment.

Random,

Actually I wasn't referring to you. Since you brought it up I went and read the thread and yes you fall into that category. If you had a problem with that you could have went to the Land and Economy Forum and started a rant there. I just think it is rude.

I agree, MrsJakal. I've seen this done in the Shopping and New Products forums, and it's really had me wishing those forums were Post Only. That would suck for people with legitimate questions about products or locations, but maybe it would bore the Heathers until they wandered off and those forums could get back to being about New Products and Shopping.

Yes, and no... I was able to post a picture of the person in question selling my shoes (in addition to a bunch of other things from other makers) and they ended up taking them down. If the forum was post only, I don't think there would have been enough social pressure to make this person think a bit about they're doing. I dunno... I don't disagree with you though.

MJ,

Yay I am so happy you're back :) I agree with you completely. As you know, I am no stranger to having a fight break out in the classifieds lol (though I don't start them generally). I have noticed it happening more and more frequently lately, and they always seem to fall into these categories:

1) Spiteful, derivative attention whores
2) People who claim to own an idea (IE...YOU CAN NEVER MAKE A PRIM BECAUSE I MADE ONE IN BETA!)
3) The sort of reverse star fucker syndrome, where an obsessed person haunts every single thread that the source of their obsession makes just to say something snippy.
4) People who make things ending in INGO. (Which reminds me, someone should really combine trends and make a game called BLINGO).
5) Wuvme Karuna. Somehow, everything is her fault.

It would be a shame for them to go back to post only, but there is some obvious abuse going on that needs to be handled more consistently.

Heather ;)

Thanks for the feedback :)

Tya, you make a good point. However, again that can be brought up in another thread providing a link to the said post. I would also hate to see the classified go back to post only because i enjoy giving positive feedback on ads or being able to ask the creator a question about their product.

Cris, Glad to be back :)

You noticed this too, eh?
I pretty much just do the occasional lurk there these days, I do not post my new stuff, and only comment on something that is so totally fabulous I just can not resist!

It is a shame, the classifieds used to be the friendliest, most drama free area on these forums.

I think Ingrid is correct.

It's a very important corrective to be able to deal with things like somebody stealing somebody else's designs.

In the absence of a thread called "Better Business Bureau," much less such an institution in the game, it's all we have.

It's the only place to try to challenge abuses. And while I don't like it when someone grabs events or produces or land rentals to slam me about some specious malicious claim, I'd rather they have the freedom to do that and I have the venue to respond to them.

I don't believe it is "rude" MrsJ to challenge somebody about to dump on to the market hundreds of little 16m squares that will be bought up by griefing idiots.

Trust me, if I were the one who had made this announcement, everyone would be flaming me.

It's only because it is beloved Hank who made it that everyone tries to see the good in it.

Bleh.

Starley, hopefully you will reconsider posting your new stuff, I know that I rely heavily on knowing whats new by reading the classifieds. Plus, I really love your stuff and would hate to miss out on something new.

Prokofy/Random,

Please reread what I said. This orginally wasn't about you so please stop making it about you. I didn't say you were rude in making a challenge. I felt it was rude of you to choose to rant as a reply to a classifed post. Therefore, offering up the suggestion that you rant in the proper forum. Sorry, if you are to lazy to search for the appropriate place to post your rants. Please keep in mind that I didn't even know about you trolling on Hanks classified post until YOU pointed it out!

Please don't call them the Heather's, it makes me feel evil :(

:p

I agree tho, although sometimes ppl make stupid dumbass mistakes, they don't need ppl following them around pointing it out all the time.

But then its a dog eat dog world out there...

;)

But it IS about me. And I'm the one who has come on before, i.e. in the thread about Richard Stern, and told people to stop flaming the classifieds. I do think that there is a need to respond to really egregious problems that arise, however, like threat of a mass grief attack in a dumping of 16ms on the land, and stealing of someone's designs.

So I propose the Lindens have a thread called Better Business Bureau.

It doesn't matter if you meant it about me or not, it's not personal. This is a generic issue we all need to sort out. If the shoe fit for me, I walked in it.

I agree with you MJ. The pupose of that forum is to let others know what products you have, not to bash or have hissy fits. I myself had fallen into that trap.. defending someone. Yes. I will always defend the peole who are honest. But I have noticed that there are certain people who always need to comment on product, comments are not the issue, its the negitivity. Kinda makes you not want to post anything anymore.

I feel sorry for people who want to post their items and shy away for fear of being bashed or rudely commented on.

hey MJ, WB

The forums are full of people, and people are dramatic. There is no two step around that. Most people, and I stress MOST don't generally flame over nothing, there is typically something they feel improtant enough to comment on, or they wouldn't. I do think it is a good idea to start your own post and referrance the other post, but that would not be as affective. anyone reading about the product would miss the flaming rant, and anyone reading the flaming rant, would be referred to the product the poster wasnt so keen on... and leaves them feeling unheard. If there is a problem, or a complaint there should be a way to express that directly within the same thread, but there should be possibly more monitoring for unfounded accusations, finger pointing, and unconstructive negative criticism.

Which leads us into more issues, like the use of linden time and what constitutes an accusation vs a fact?

So it seems the freedoms we are given we tend to abuse, and if taken away we would whine and complain to get it back.

I personally believe people should be adult enough to only offer important, positive, or otherwise helpful info. So we dont end up with a post only forum

I agree that there shouldn't be so much negativity, but it would also suck if the Imagoel Bests of SL were never brought to the attention of the community. (I think that was about a 20 page thread in the General section if I recall)
