Responsibilities in SL

The last month has been weird for me -- my play time has dropped way off, and not all of it has been because of real life getting in the way.

I had a LindenWorld plot but during the two weeks of prep time RL did take all my time, so that by the time LW opened my plot still wasn't ready. For the last month I've hardly played because I felt somehow that if I was going to be in SL I should finish what I started and really get crackin' on my LW plot.

It sort of took away the fun relaxation factor in my mind because I felt guilty doing anything else with an unfinished game in LW. Of course, I should have probably just bowed out earlier and relieved myself of the burden since I wasn't going to get it presentable this month.

Anybody else found that a "responsibility" in SL, real or imagined, has impacted their gameplay?

And PS if anyone wants copies of any of my LW stuff (the cannon was a nice piece of scripting IMHO) just IM me.

I agree to a certain extent. Having a "job" in SL can be a drag unless it is something you really want to be doing.

I had to clear out of Lindenworld because I didnt have enough dwell at my glasshouse, but I was happy to do so. I had about $4300 tied up in that build and since I wasnt getting the dwell, it wasnt paying off for me. Now I got that cash flow back and another player gets to have a crack at making a cool attraction, its a win-win situation.

Just have fun with SL, it should not be a chore. If you find yourself not headed the direction you want to go, change course.

Hi, my name is Cadroe and I have Nerd Attention Deficit Disorder.

I started a cathedral project for Halloween, got a lot done, went through a stage like you describe, then just gave up and started toying with other projects in the last week. Fortunately no one else was impacted so it was OK. A deadline can turn fun into work pretty easily I guess. I'm going to avoid doing things with deadlines in SL.
Maybe that would help you too.

Yep. Very familiar. I have a dozen things that I promised to do for people, and I feel bad about taking so long to get to them. It's just that -- oddly enough -- if I work so hard in SL, it's no longer entertainment. It's a job that I pay $15/mo to do.

(I still plan to build the Globe Theatre. And that new aircraft, motorcycle, and grand piano that I promised to various people are on their way too. Eventually.)

If someone commisions some SL building or texturing from me, I usually make them aware that I have other projects ongoing and it aint gonna be 'next day'. (actually, that is true in FL too heh). Cos I know what an absent minded, multiple-project-juggling fool I am hehe!

And if I'm dragging me heels on a project for someone, I try to IM them often to give them an update, even if it's a 'sorry, not got much done'. It stops things getting messy.

Although I do alot of little builds for free cos theyre fun!

FUN! Thats the keyword, eh!

I started to feel the same way maintaining my LW build. But it was a good learning experience to find out how many ways someone can break/exploit your build. I assume it was far more frustrating for those who had rollercoaster or other rides.

I'm pretty much the same way so I try to avoid having any obligations in SL and I avoid getting involved in group projects. I'm happiest when I can just follow my whims or be a total slacker without impacting anyone else. For me it's because obligations in SL feel way too much like my RL job. I'm glad not everyone is like me though :)

I completely understand. . .

Sometimes, when I have a deadline or a mentored event that I am supposed to do, it does feel like work. . .

I do my best not to worry too much about it, because, in the end it is a game.

Sometimes though, I feel even more responsible to SL than RL.

Chip, given the professional way you run the store and the incredible work you and the other Islanders did for Evie, you sure could have fooled me!

I feel much the same (similarly, after experiencing things as an officer in a group, and struggling for months to keep people happy and involved.) It became a big responsibility. As long as I was able to make it fun for others, though, I loved it!

It got too stressful, though, especially after it became apparent I wasn't inspiring people anymore, or getting them excited about more group activities. So, I'm with you Chip, time to be a slacker and go back to creating effects on a whim.

I know what you mean, I started building a house, but it became tedius, and if i'm not enjoying it, it's not much of a game, so I just put up the default cabin and was done with it :D

I would recommend if you dont have lots of money, to put up the cabin, and if you have more money, to put up one of the store bought mansions or get someone to build it for you.

Aww :) Thanks Ananada! Evie gave me an opportunity I couldn't pass up. But even then I spent a few weeks beating my head against the wall trying to figure out what I wanted to build and not liking any of my first drafts, hehe. Despite the theme she gave me a wide berth to come up with something that I was happy with :)

I love making clothing to support my whims because I can just do it when I feel like, and whatever I feel like making. People will either like it, or not. I turn down custom work because I know as soon as I agree to do it, it will be the last thing in the world I want to do ;)

I feel the same way. I have many projects that I am involved with and not much time to dedicate since RL has been hectic. My bf once told me of the responsibilities that come with playing an online game like SL. He said that if he stopped playing any of his RPG's nobody would miss him and he can go back to it whenever he feels like it. But with SL you will be missed because the players are not NPC's, they are people with feelings and expectations. This has been my first real online game and even if I have this responsability, I enjoy every second of it! :D

I was asked to script for a LindenWorld project and it really did make it feel a bit to much like work for a while. It ended up being interesting for one thing because it was a bit of a competition between two scripters but it definitely took a little of the fun out for a while. I still have more work to do but since the main ride is done it's more of a "if it gets done great... if the plots still ours after month-end great" kinda thing. Of course getting a blasted cold and feeling half-dead in the middle of all this didn't help either

Now if we just had about 6 totally flat no-build Sims to race hoverboards in then I'd really have to excuse myself from all public events and an excuse never to take a commision job again. :D :D

Personally I try to avoid projects, deadlines, and expectations. I know how I play and selfish as it is it is for *my* entertainment. Not to say I don't get entertainment from others (and I do entertain others as well), just that for projects I tend to be a loner. I set my own pace, and because my little brain is always churning I tend to bounce from one project to another -- whatever's my current fancy (or misgiving) gets my attention.

I'm on the LW waiting list, today Nova asked if I wanted considered for this round. I declined. Partly because my game is already in LW (on ironchef's land), and partly because I really don't want to worry about LW. I'd rather goof off than have to stress over a game. :)

It's even worse when "for fun" for others and yourself you try to establish a community build, beit themed Linden sponsored or private. Just to try to have a realistic feel to a neighborhood or a gathering of like minds.

Just to have some SOB stop in and try everthing they can to ruin it for you and others. Totally oblivious that there is alot of open space in SL to "play" their games. They seem bent on trying to make your life miserable.

Even if ya give up and try to move on to keep the "fun" in it, and they FOLLOW you!!! hehe.

Among the other various resons themes fail, and cause hardships for those who want to have fun with it.

Remembered but not forgotten:

Project:---------Founder:-----------------How I think it failed:
LindenBurg-----Wednesday Grimm------Lag
Pleasure Cove--Bel Muse and friends.--Conservative conflicts
Kissling Isle----Me------------------------Harrassment w/lack of resolve
Rt66------------George Busch------------He relocated RL/No sl
Americana------Roots from Rt66--------unsure as at this time I was living in solitude away from things after leaving Kissling.

And the ever restarted and relocated constantly - Open Flame of Thai Greenacre. I think its still up, but always gets a bad rap due to prejudices.

I'm sure there are more, I just don't get around much to see it all.

Oh man Charlie, for a second there it looked like you said "the ever retarded open flame" and I was just about to flame your butt ;)

As for why Americana died, I've heard rumors, however rumors are not good enough so be told as fact, so I'll stick to this single judgement:
Remember how we all said v1.1 would fixed Americana? Remember how Americana died as soon as v1.1 came out? Try to think for a second how v1.1 would cause death rather than life.

At least, that seems the most reasonable outlook to me :D Really, honestly, loved the place. It's too bad what happened :(

Oh and Camille, where did you get the S from? It's just "No NADD" unless you put "Syndrome" on the end but then you would have "Disorder Syndrome" which makes no sense at all :p

Charlie, I couldn't agree with you more - on every account.

When 1.1 came close, Joan and I took the opportunity to see what our SecondLife had become - in many ways a SecondJob and that's not what we were here for. We made the decision to scale down (a lot), pack some buildings indefinitely, and kept a few packed temporarily.

For us the core still is Joan's and our home in Boardman, plus the old cabin in De Haro (for sentimental reasons).

This seems to turn out just fine in two ways, less obligations (the need to cover taxes) for us, and supporting Linden's objective to cut back on in world resources (more for others).

Scaling down and more playing time does mean that people sometimes have to wait a bit longer before I complete a project. That seems an unfortunate result, although I'm sure we get a handle on that as well.
