An idle thought that's been running through my head while reading the moderated versus unmoderated forum threads:
A forum system in which the thread starter has to review responses before they appear. The thread starter gets three options: approved for posting, rejected completely, or returned to the respondant for editing. The thread starter cannot edit the contents of a response, only accept, reject, or return to the sender for editing and resubmitting.
Some people would allow any response at all, some might allow anything except personal attacks, some might serve as editors , making suggestions for improvements in wording, spelling etc.
The Linden Lab forum moderator would still have the same powers as they do now.

Sounds like you'd have a bunch of threads without any posts in them to counter the thread starter's opinions/ideas...then a thousand more "opposite opinion" threads blasting the orig. starter for unfair censorship....

Xtopherxaos Ixtab is correct in that people who didn't actually want to have a debate on an issue might not post sensible responses from those who disagreed with them, assuming the thread was one initiating a debate of some sort. These folk's threads wouldn't be very interesting to those who want to read contentious threads, so they could just mute the thread starter and not waste their time looking at anything by that person anymore.
Interesting how the assumption of contentiousness was made without any reason, as if their is no reason to make a post on a forum other than to start an argument.
Folks wishing to have a true battle of ideas, as distinct from stupid bickering, could do so.
Folks wishing to have a bunch of stupid bickering could just not post anything that made sense, was on topic, and didn't include at least an ad hominem attack or two.
Anyone amused by or tolerant of random pictures would allow one's such as the one shown to appear, folks who found that to be distracting in the context of a discussion would not.
And all these different sorts of thread styles could occur without a single post from Alby.
----------------------------------- addendum -------------------------------------
Maybe what I'm thinking about is similar to a LiveJournal thingy? I've never done one and the kids always stare daggers if my velocity drops too low when they have theirs on the screen. I'lll bet there's something in existence already that works much like the foggy image in my mind.
