No lie. It's pretty crazy. The fact that he is a Republican is incidental.

It is a little rule called Rule 11.8.

Rule 11.8 reads as follows:
From: someone
Rule 11.8

The Speaker may appoint one or more members to the position of Hawk. The Speaker may designate one of the Hawks as Senior Hawk. The Hawks shall serve as ex officio members of all standing committees and subcommittees of the House and shall have a vote on all committees and subcommittees.

So basically if he is losing a vote in committee by 2 votes he can appoint 3 "hawks" as ex officio voting members of the committee to push through the vote.

If he is losing by 5 votes, he only needs to appoint 6 "hawks" to the committee with full voting rights to change the outcome.

This was presented to the House on the first day of session before the SPeaker made committee assignments. All Republicans voted yes for this rule as to not jeopardize their committee assignments.

This is unprecedented in US government and is quite odd.

From what I hear even most Republican members of the House are disgusted by 11.8

It is really crazy and completely removes power from all the members, including the Republicans.

I'm tellin' ya :)

If the leadership of the Republican Party continues this sort of fascist tap-dance, we'll have to fit them for ankle chains and orange jumpsuits.

Wow - it took me awhile to find out anything at all about this. In light of the draconian property rights bills that are passing in Georgia (strengthening of eminent domain for the state), this is pretty spooky.

Gosh, I opened this expecting it to be about the nation of Georgia!

This is all perfectly fine. We're at war.

It has always been so Comrade Malachi - for all the records of Minitrue say it is so...

He who controls the past, controls the future.. He who controls the present, controls the past.

This is all perfectly fine. We're at war.

Step 1: Establish a war on a concept, rather than an enemy nation, so that we can be at war for an extended period of time.
Step 2: Confuse the nation so they forget that striking fear was the enemy's goal, and instead use it to convince the nation to give up its rights.
Step 3: Flagrantly abuse power in the name of wartime need.
Step 4: Use your unlimited power to whatever ends you desire.

For some reason this thread brought this quote to mind:

A society will remain as free or as enslaved as the conscious dispositions of individuals determine it shall be. Just as the roots of oppression are found in passivity, the foundations of our liberty reside in highly energized and focused minds that insist upon their independence. There are no shortcuts, no structures or doctrines that can be erected, no hallowed documents to be revered, to save us the effort of continually challenging those who would presume to exercise authority over our lives.
Butler Shaffer

Ooh, nice Isis. I'm definitely adding him to my "must read" list.

The republican party in this country is getting very surreal and frightening. I can't believe that the Republican house members would have the incredibly low self worth and utter lack of spine it would take to vote for that. Individuality is becoming well and truly dead. Every last person who voted for it should be thrown out on their sorry asses and barred from public service for the rest of their miserable lives.

Let's hope some smart Judges rule this unconstitutional.
