Tip for new users: cool display settings you should try

Several times now, new users have asked me why they can't see light effects or why they can't see shiny surfaces on objects. These are options in your Preferences that will make SL look *great*, and the impact on the speed of your client is negligible.

* To see nice lighting effects: Edit > Preferences > Display, then select "Local Lighting". This option gives the world a feeling of depth and realism, especially at night, when light sources glow onto other objects.

* To see shininess: Edit > Preferences > Display, then select "Object Bump". This option lets you see the reflective surfaces that are so common now on vehicles. Without this option, object can appear somewhat flat and lifeless.

Seriously, I consider these "must have" display options.

Enjoy!

any more tips up your hoofs. Whis is god like in debug? I just do not feel like brakeing anything to see what this or that does.

I think god-like in the menu is only for Linden AV's to use. I've clicked on it an nothing happens. :(

I think a lot of stuff on the debug menu is old left-overs from the beta days and/or only usable by the Lindens. Just guessing mind you, but I played with all the settings and some just don't -seem- to do anything.

For the newbs, another slider option I like is to reduce the detail on trees. I reduced tree detail to like 20% and definately got a few extra FPS.

I picked the God Mode option under Debug and became omniscient and omnipresent. I got better though :)

(And no, god mode really doesn't do anything for us regular folk)

I knew you were going to say that.

I agree.... anyone who thinks they have a machine that can handle it should definitely give the graphics options a go. I recently upgraded my pc, and threw every option to its best/max settings... and fell in love with SL all over again. It truly is a beautiful thing when you get the full effect! :)

*bump*

The 1.2 preview seems to turn off the Object Bump and Local Lighting options for users with ATI graphics cards, which seems silly to me. Want to see shiny surfaces? Enable these options in Edit > Preferences > Display.

Most SL updates seem to turn off most of the graphics options I've noticed.... like local lighting and object bump.

Recent updates have been better about this but yes I noticed it with the 1.2 preview too.
