I just moved back to my hometown earlier this month. Today I went to get my haircut since my 'fro was getting too ridiculous. The old barber shop I went to when I lived here a long time ago was closed for the day so I went searching for another barber shop. I couldn't find any so I ended up going to some family salon. So I ended up having this chubby lady who barely could speak english give me the fresh fade. The haircut ended up alright, but somehow I felt my manhood drop a few points today. I'm used to the care of seasoned barbers. Barbers who use a straight razor to cut the fuzzies on the back of my neck. Barbers who talk shit to each other while working on my hair.
So I'm here to ask the fellas.. what do you prefer? A salon or a barber? Which do you think is better and why?

Barber! Ever since... I was born... I always cut my hair at the same place. And that's the way its gonna be until the poor guy retires. I think that by then I will probably have enough money to bribe him into not retiring

I tend to go to salons instead of barber shops. I figure since I have long hair why would I want some guy who specializes in buzz cuts being tempted to hack it all off "for my own good" (damn hippy freak!).

I agree with you Ironcook. THere is nothing like the strong sensual touch of a man's hands all over my head and neck. And when he breaks out the straight razor and you start up that late night prison fantasy. I can't imagine giving all that up to go to a salon.

Barber, only two of them in my small town. Always a good place to catch up on what is going on. And hell, how many salons will slap a steaming hot towel on your face, and give ya a good close shave using a straight razor, with a hand that shakes like a leaf.

My barber just sold his shop. He was great. He knew exactly what to do without any styling input from me.
And he did all the talking. Definitive opinions on everything, and a Yonkers attitude and accent.
I have no idea what I'm supposed to do now. My hair is rapidly approaching the street-psycho stage of dishevelment, but I cannot yet bring myself to go back to a "styling salon" and spend twice the money for half the haircut, while batting away countless offers of pomade, mousse, gel, scented talc, spritzed crapola, and chipper little questions about my career and homelife.
I may just shave my head. Or let it get a little longer, and start wandering down the street, panhandling and talking to myself.

Salon, even though I have short hair.
My hairstylist is totally cute and gives a great scalp massage and shampoo.
I could never replace the touch of a beautiful woman with that of a man (Agree there with you Nehai, even though you prefer a man's touch).
But then again, the Sicilian barber I used to go to, and I think only barber in town, has gotten a little too old for the job, and got to fear for the safety of my ears and throat.
The best? Military barbers. Fast, efficient, and the perfect haircut.

ps. And nothing better like going to the saloon next door to the salon after a good haircut!

Hands down, Barber...... I am NOT a salon person, and you can shove that "veldel sason" (or whatever it is called) straight up your ass... I'd have my wife cut my hair before going to one of them "pretty boy" hair cutting salon's and that is saying a LOT here seeing as she cuts hair about as good as making garlic bread (LONG story hehehe). At one point my father went to a neighboring village for haircuts because the barber was the mayor and he thought that was hilarious. Barbers are cool.

I tend to cut my own hair also. It takes me a while to trust a good barber and when my hair gets too crazy, I end up busting out the clippers and shaving all my hair off myself.
Seems like there are 3 main people an individual needs to have trust in: Barber, Mechanic, Computer tech.
So far I only have 1 covered :/
