New players in 1.2

Hi,

I used to play Second Life during the beta, then I figured I didn't have the time to play so I didn't sign on when the game went live. But Second Life has kind of been at the back of my mind as it's a totally revolutionary game, and finally I couldn't resist the temptation to sign back up.

A few things I noticed was that firstly, I was still able to log in with my old name and password to the web site and see the accounts status (Cancelled), but it wasn't possible for me to reactivate it after 60 days. This is not a big deal, but it would mean that names of old and dead accounts are still reserved limiting the choice of names for new players.

Secondly, I've been reading a lot on the forum about the changes in 1.2. I was sceptical at first, especially mixing real money with L$, but after reading a lot of the posts I came to understand better what it was. I guess land, millionairs and one player hogging all the primitives hadn't yet become a big problem in the beta, but I can see why LL are doing what they are doing now with 1.2. The only thing that annoys me is that new players who sign up after 1.2 is out, only get 512m2 of land and 117 primitives (which is why I'm signing up now). Isn't that a little too little to build much with. And is it really fair to have a different deal for those that signed up before and after 1.2? After all they will still be paying the same monthly fees.

Just a few thoughts.

Little Tigereye

p.s. Of course, it's good that long time players get awarded for their effort, but maybe it could be done somehow differently.

I heard that all previous accounts that were deleted will be re-activated. If you paid a monthly fee ever, at least.

Dunno about beta accounts. Aska linden :)

We do not delete user accounts, we just send them to the corn field. If you were in the beta program, you can reinstate your account by contacting support@lindenlab.com.

So beta players are the Children of the Corn?

I may be out of it, but was that a Twilight Zone episode at one time or another?

Yeah, I was trying to place that reference too. I think the Twilight Zone episode might have been based on a Ray Bradbury story too. And there was even a Johnny Bravo version.

On the other hand Phoenix may have had something totally else in mind.

If the Twilight Zone episode you're referring to is the one I think it is, it was based on the story "It's a _Good_ Life" by Jerome Bixby.

cuz I imagine if alot of the big builders from beta were suddenly stuck on something that size they would go insane and insite a riot. Just my two cents ;)

Uh... isn't there a horror flick called "Children of the Corn?" I thought that was what Phoenix was referencing.

I was playing for the first time since beta yesterday, and selecting land to get a better idea of how big 512m2 were, and 1024m2, and found that 512m2 is actually a reasonably sized plot of land with enough space to build stuff (I would be more worried about the primitive limit). And anyway, since I signed up now, I'll get 1024m2...right? :D

The reactivation is no big deal. I'm quite happy beeing Little Tigereye. Though you might want to change the FAQ, where it actually says accounts older than 60 days can't be reactivated.

I too thought it was the "Children of the Corn" the horror flick. There even was a "Children of the Corn II", scary stuff. Come to think of it, my old character is now part of the children of the corn...poor guy.

Just one question. If you use more land than you've payed for you have to pay a little more. Does this permanently up your account to a more expensive one, or just for that month? So if you release the extrra land before next month, you go back to paying your old monthly fee. I'm guessing the latter.

Cheers,

Little

Yes LT, the way I read the post about excess land charging is that it's charged on a month by month basis, added onto your base payment then reset again.

However, a word of warning to all. I assume that there's a time of day/night when the system adds up how much land each person has, or worse still, it simply records the max amount of land you hold at any one time... So grabbing a huge amount of land just for fun then imediatly releasing it again could land you with a huge bill at the end of the month that you're not expecting...

As I understand it. When you try to go over your limit you get a warning in-game that you're about to go over it, and you have to specifically agree to the increased costs.
But I do think you have to pay for the MAX amount of land you had that month. So if you buy a huge chunk of land and keep it only for 5min, you still have to pay for it as if you had kept it the whole month. But you will get warned about this, so it shouldn't be a big deal.

You can't accidentally go over the limit for your payment level. The process for buying land is that you select a plot of land, click "claim", and confirm the purchase. If this purchase puts you over the limit for your current payment plan, the client informs you of this, and asks you again if you want to purchase the land. If you say "yes", it dumps you into your web browser, at a page on the SecondLife web site to change your payment plan to one that allows a higher land usage.

In total, you need to confirm three times that you want to make a land purchase that will put you over your current limit.
