MP3s and downloads

If I were looking for a good site to find independant music to download, ( and maybe upload to SL) where would I go? Any suggestions?

Just remember that independent does not equal public domain. Uploading music from iuma would still be copywrite infrengement without the artists permission (Correctly me if they have a license statement somewhere, I could not find one.).

Of course Lordfly can grant whatever rights or lack thereof for his music on option42.com.

However, also remember that indie groups are much more likely to not go the RIAA's route of attacking their customers.

Granted, but there ARE hyperactive local bands around here that would jump at your throat if you were giving out free cds of their concerts or whatever.

I, however, don't care, because I want as many people to listen to and enjoy my music as possible.

I would assume a large amount of the local bands would also be apt to want others to hear their music and would not mind inplementing them to SL. It would be respectful (and also legal) to request permission before doing as such. Since SL is taking more of a stance as a service provider (I.E webhost model of business) opposed to solely a game, I could see much more potential for legal muck to enter.

How so? Service providers are explicitly not responsible for content.

Because it is no longer as questionable of where the fault lies. It would directly be the end user, the player who ported the music since there is much closer presidence.

It never has been questionable. It's always been legally explicit.

The 'fault' lies with the uploader.... unfortunately most 'offenders' can only be sued for about a buck fitty.... soooooo..... up until recently the RIAA hasn't wanted to go after them....

A simple answer for a simple question.

Ah, yes. Please note however that just because one has the right to freely and legaly download it, does not necessarily mean one has the right to re-distribute it, modify it (i.e. cut it in to 10 second hunks), use it for various other purposes (I.e. theme music for games, etc.), broadcast it (across to potentially 1000's of users on SL) or sell it (even for L$ could potentially be considered a sale). One needs to look at the individual license for each work (or sometimes each of the linked sites has a blanket license).
A simple solution is to just simply email the band/group/individual who's work is in question, state what you want to do, and I would be willing to bet in a majority of the times they would grant you the right to use it on SL, since it would be a mutually beneficial ordeal.
But I am not trying to state what people have to do. I do not support the RIAA, they can go to hell for all I am concerned. I just wish to remind people that there can be legal ramifications, even with freely downloaded music, for spreading/broadcasting it on SL.
