Does the SL-equivalent of Echelon exist?

A question that has come up on occasion is, just how closely does LL 'listen in'? Do they regularly peek in on IMs and/or chats? Is it perhaps even more organized than that, and they have some sort of sifting program to flag potentially 'interesting' converstation?

And most important of all, how would the SL community feel if such a thing *were* in place?

Has anyone had any reason to think that LL *has* listened? Or maybe you had a situation that more-or-less proved they weren't, because if they were there's no way they'd *not* have done something about it?

LL deleted my post! Clearly someone over there is prejudiced against marmosets.

Ahhhh, love the respect.

Did it ever occur to you for a second, simply not to post? Or was it necessary that you had to

a) Make fun of this person
b) Bump his thread.

And I actually cared that you are ignoring me?

Morse,

I think, though cannot confirm, that LL has access to any/all chat logs. I do not think that they randomly sift through them, they are far too busy.

A good rule of thumb is that anything you might not want others (namely LL) to ever have access to should be said on channels *outside* of SL.

Let's implement PGP in SL and then send encrypted chat strings all over the place!

Last summer, a friend of mine was on a smear campaign against someone... she was telling me someone's RL info and was instantly banned. My guess is that she had previously been reported and so LL was listening to all of her chats so as to catch her in the act. It's a good thing I don't cyber :P

Seriously? Define instantly?
Is it possible someone just didn't report them and a Linden caught it right away?

Yes, I suspect that was the case.

Pretty sure they have chat logs, though.

The urge to watch others when they think they aren't being watched is very strong in humans. If the ability exists, then I imagine some Lindens engage in it from time to time. I've observed this sort of thing happen many times in several similar, though text-based, environments.

I find it unlikely that any Linden is unprofessional enough to use information gleaned in this manner against you. But if something absolutely must be private, you'd be wise to say it elsewhere.
