April, my advise would be, know exactly what you are going to do with it, inch by inch before you buy.

You definitely don't want to go through the huge initial expenditure and on-going monthly costs without having a clear plan for it.

Also, don't make the mistake to consider it an investment and be ready to take a huge loss when you sell.

Basically, owning a sim is a huge economic and time commitment you don't want to make unless you know exactly the reasons why you want to make such commitment.

You will love the feeling of having so much land and objects available, but the feeling will wear down after a while, especially after the bills start coming in.

Good luck!

Tito

I guess I would have to say that if you don't have something you are already doing that is viable and income-generating on a quarter or half sim, don't buy a whole sim.

Well first of all, if you're looking at a Private Island, in my own personal expereince, its one of the best things I have done in SL.

Pros:

- No neighbors, or if there are, they are by choice YOUR choice (neighboring sims require your authorization to move in)
- Because of the changes implemented by Cory and his teams, you get the current equipement and not the older class hardware.
- Cheaper to obtain then mainland sims. USD $1000 is often cheaper then the $1200-1800 pricetag seen on the auctions
- 15000 freakin prims!
- Many advanced tools such as: is it visible to the other players, who can even teleport to your island, land textures, Sun control and a bit more.
- Personal Telehub for your sim, no 2 minute treks to get there.
- Get to choose its name!

Cons:
- If you wish to sell the land, you need to get a buyer for the entire sim otherwise you lose the initial USD$1000 investment. Note I say, entire sim.
- Must make sure that you can finacially support the $195/mnth cost of the sim
- Not connected to the mainland, so you've got to draw in the visitors somehow.

I do recommend that if you need the sim to produce income for you, that you have a plan for it. Know what you want to build before you start and even start building some of the content in advance if you can. Furthermore, make sure you can support it for the first few monthes from your own pocket. If your name is Kris, then build what you want for your own and friend's enjoyment ;)

So far, having my own private island has been a great experience, and won't go back to the rat race on the mainland. I prefer to pay LL my $1000 then pay the land barons even more. Plus, the experience of when Ryan delivers the empty island to you according to your specs is so awesome.

Good luck and hope you make the right choice for yourself!

How do you get foot traffic and fly-by traffic to a business on an island when you are off the grid? How do people see you? Is it only word-of-mouth boutique kinda stuff?
