Is this the future in Second Life or all online games?

This would only happen in SL if a resident came up with it, implemented it, and it became highly popular.

Hence the beauty of SL :)

Likely... anywhere where there is a large market, advertising will follow. Only two things would stop if (1) players ignoring it and (2) massive outcry that causes players to ignore it.

I wouldn't care about the functionality myself unless you started getting pop-up ads in a Bladerunner-esque manner. People have demonstrated that there are limits to where they want advertising to intrude, but I expect at the least we will see branding soon in most games. Imagine billboards for RL products in cityscapes, etc. Also instead of the generic cola machine, you get pepsi or whatever.

Second Life lends itself to branding less than most games since content is resident created. An online game I'm testing in beta right now gave Ferran and I a good laugh... we ran accross and Alienware computer in a mission.

All it does is open up your browser at the ordering page? That's a bit weak. I want an agent from the pizza company to materialize infront of me, take my order and disappear without me having to leave the game window. And they should be able to get my delivery address without me having to tell them (as long as I'd previously given permission obviously).

Why did I just get this horrible image in my mind of scripted prim-genitals spurting out Pepsi adverts?

Pfft... you people are so spoiled... back in beta we had to get our pizza by walking barefoot through the snow, uphill both ways. And when we got home, the pizza was COLD!
But we LIKED it!

One of the reasons that SL is not a Gibson/Stephenson-esque metaverse is that you can't do stuff in it that affects the real world (other than drain your bank account). This pizza ordering thing is an inevitable, if rudimentary, step in that direction.

That would be breathtakingly cool.

Exactly.

Before the Internet was popular, it was for science / learning / fun. Then came real companies getting advertising. Then came companies letting people order online as technology followed.

This could be a huge way for LL to grow - private servers sold to companies.

No, something like that would require an API; no danger of that happening.
