Dear Phillip,
SL is awash with land... land coming in from FirstLand, Land being sold from IW players, and new auction land entering the grid. Consequently, we've seen a dramatic drop in the price of land.
Phillip, is there a target L$ price per M that Linden Labs is aiming to hit? Your input on this would help to add clarity to the land industry outlook.
Thank You ~Jaq

Yeah, no kidding.
How does he expect anyone to play in his world if he doesn't tell us the rules?
I've been down this road a 100 times. A target land price is necessary.

Even if there is an undisclosed targeted land price, residents should have access to better "barometers" of some factors which influence land price. These should include:
A fairly well-broken down and up-to-the-week census of Second Life residents, including breakdowns by: -Number of overall registered accounts -Number of unique players (I'm guessing filtered by CC# and address; while inaccurate in some ways, for example Wife/Husband on same CC# would probably count as a single person, 6 alts of a resident would not count as 6 unique players.) -Number of unique players after inactive/banned/cancelled accounts are subtracted -Number of unique players who have been active recently, further broken down by Last Three Months, Last Month, Last Week)
Better information on how many new sims are going to be added, in what time frame(Lets say over the next 3-6 months), and any unusual factors about them that might add or detract from their value. Remember the Great Snow Rush?

Why is a target price required in a free market?

It absolutely isn't Lance. The average prices of land should be used as one barometer of the overall economic health in SL, but not be targeted.
The target should be a fairly stable economy, with trends in spending, inflation/deflation and land values on the up or down but neither Flying nor Crashing. And since residents are investing quite a bit of time, effort and real-world money, it seems that major trends in resource shifts (How much land there will be in the near future, and roughly what type) and marketplace (How many people there are, in a real sense. NOT how many accounts have been registered, but how many people are playing, and still active in-world) should be kept as fairly open information. Without these information resources, people are being asked to invest based on too many unknowns; not only The Big Unknown, whether LL will still be in business a year, or five years from now, but even how much land there will be in 3 months time, and how many active players there are currently who might be interested in it.

why bother? cheap land sells and over priced land doesn't until it becomes cheaper. you can get the average price of land off the sl site any time of the day or night and use that as a measure if you want, or you could just look at the prices for land and decide what you want to pay and pay it. there's plenty of land selling under the average and plenty selling over the average. no need for Linden price fixing. basically if you're buying and you think prices are too high don't buy high priced land. if you're selling and you think prices are too low then find a way to make people want your over priced ridiculously expensive land.

I think this is simple matter of balance supply with demand. And that land market is clearly on downwards trend again since about the week before Christmas should be obvious to everybody by now. I am having real hard time to deliver on my promise to buy any land anywhere anytime.

if you want to know the target price, graph the price of land over the course of weeks or months. look at tigers' auction analysis.
no handouts!
