I found this interesting.

The states that receive the more federal funding than they pay are mostly republican states, while the states that pay more than they receive are democratic states. Those freeloading republicans need to get jobs. :)

States Receiving Most in Federal Spending Per Dollar of Federal Taxes Paid:

1. D.C. ($6.17)
2. North Dakota ($2.03)
3. New Mexico ($1.89)
4. Mississippi ($1.84)
5. Alaska ($1.82)
6. West Virginia ($1.74)
7. Montana ($1.64)
8. Alabama ($1.61)
9. South Dakota ($1.59)
10. Arkansas ($1.53)

States Receiving Least in Federal Spending Per Dollar of Federal Taxes Paid:

1. New Jersey ($0.62)
2. Connecticut ($0.64)
3. New Hampshire ($0.68)
4. Nevada ($0.73)
5. Illinois ($0.77)
6. Minnesota ($0.77)
7. Colorado ($0.79)
8. Massachusetts ($0.79)
9. California ($0.81)
10. New York ($0.81)

I looked at the government archives and found that the states you have listed are not all in the categories you placed them in. You did say most, so I will let you off the hook on that. I just think the stats you listed, as you listed them, dont prove your point.

The 2000 popular vote by state and the unemployment rate (as of 8/2004) for each state follows...

DC - Dem 7.5
ND - Rep 3.3
NM - Dem 5.4
MS - Rep 5.5
AK - Rep 7.6
WV - Rep 5.5
MT - Rep 4.8
AL - Rep 6.0
SD - Rep 3.2
AR - Rep 5.4
Average unemployment rate this group: 5.4

NJ - Dem 4.8
CT- Dem 4.6
NH - Rep 3.7
NV - Rep 4.0
IL - Dem 6.1
MN - Dem 4.8
CO - Rep 5.1
MA - Dem 5.4
CA - Dem 5.8
NY - Dem 5.6
Average unemployment rate this group: 5.0

Rearrange the groups by how the actual popular vote went to get these unemployment results...
Rep - 5.4
Dem - 5.4

So, there must be more going on than simple unemployment.
I like stats, they are fun.

This isn't just unemployment. This is all federal mone received by the states.

In other words some states receive more federal dollars than they pay in and some states receive less than they pay in.

The reason is actually pretty simple in most cases. I just like to be an ass. :)

The majority of that money is roads. A road is a road is a road. If an interstate has to go through a state with a small population, then it is unrealistic for that small population to cover the costs.

DC of course isn't a state but we have a ton of federal compliance shit we have to do with the govt being here.
