This subject has come up before, but not recently. I'm not talking about deliberate greifing here. I'm refering to more innocent behavior that may get people mad at you, even if you didn't mean any harm. Please consider these rules to help events go more smoothly. - Sit down. An avitar wandering around the audiance is distracting and may block people's view.
- Please take conversations elsewhere. If your chat with your friends is appearing on the same chatlog as the banter of the event, you're interrupting.
- Avoid long IM conversations with other audiance members. They may be concentrating on the event (and won't be able to give you the attention they otherwise would.)
- Keep the focus of the event on the host and whomever is currently involved, not yourself. For example, if you're at a show and tell and Joe Avitar is showing his robot, this is not the time to rez your robot and start talking about him (even if it's way cooler than the one being featured) Wait your turn.
- Roaring up to an event in a loud, snazzy vehicle is distracting. Especially if the event is well underway.
- If you stumble upon an event in progress, use the events button to get the details. People may be too caught up in the event to explain what's going on.
Hope I don't sound too arrogant or self-rightious here. In my early days I did some of this. Lucky for me, no one strangled me. Anyone else feel free to add their suggestions (or modifications) to the eventiquette list.

sitting also causes you to generate fewer updates for everybody to download and process. we stand up to be polite in real life, and sit down to be polite in second life ha ha.
it also very much helps to remove scripted attachments (especially particles), intricately primmed hair, very alphad & semi transparent jewelry et al. anything we can do to help not drag down people's frame rate is one help times the number of attendees.

Keep sounds to a minimum.
Don't show up 20 minutes late to a 30 minute event and complain that you're being excluded.
Take a minute on the sidelines to look around and let things rez when you first arrive. Plowing straight into the middle is usually a disruption to everyone else.
Don't aim for the middle of the cluster of green dots as a landing point. Landing a bit off to the side will usually ensure that you aren't making a Lenny & Squiggy entrance.

Olympia - yes your list is right on! Some folks have no idea that an event is put on by a host who has worked to make it enjoyable for people. Your guidelines are Excellent!, thank you for posting them.

Right on, Olympia! I sometimes think hosts are too nice to people who show up late and don't know what's going on, by repeating the purpose/rules of the event to every latecomer. If you show up late, do your homework or figure out by context how things work. And if it's a building contest, don't expect to get the same amount of time everyone else has.

Of course, if you are sent an unsolicited teleport to someone's "Dance, we Rock!" dwell-vent, then you can dispense with all of these rules, attach several XyText Notecard reader boards, and dance away while making farting noises!

Oooh good list Olympia! I'd like to add: If you arrive late to an event, don't whine when answers don't come as fast as you'd like them to come. As was said, people are caught in the event already, so they're more likely to miss the questions or answer slowly. No need to spam the chat with stuff such as "Hey u heard my question?", "<repeat question 5 lines in a row>", "???????" and other crap. Just wait a bit more.

And don't start rezzing things unnecessarily. They are too likely to ghost in crowds, and there you are stuck with giant monkeys and plywood boxes.
