1: Make each option as simple as possible, do not ever include a reason in the poll choice. Example: Ban pinapple from pizza? - Yes, they taste disgusting and ruin the pizza Bad
- No. Good
The first poll option there is bad because it makes an inference that may not be true. You may not like pinapple on pizza, but find it ok otherwise. 2: Make sure to include a 'dont care / neutral' option. Not everyone has an opinion about your topic, but you can be sure people are going to select something regardless. 3: Group as many poll choices together as possible, ideally simply have 'Strongly Agree, Agree, Dont have an opinion, Disagree, Strongly Disagree' as your options, and rephrase the question to fit. 4: Keep your poll topic as brief and to the point as possible, avoid using words which carry a connotation, try not to support any angle. (The above example written such would be 'Pinapple on pizza?' '* Yeuck' '* Meh' '*Great!') 5: Dont start a poll if the outcome isnt going to be actually used. There's too many polls in this forum as it stands. 6: Public polls are bad. Polls should be an anonymous query, people may have an opinion one way, but vote another simply because it's being shown publically. 7: Dont ever use a forum poll's data to argue a point unless it's a 95:1 style result, with a sufficient number of people voting. -Adam

And whereas in most professions these would be considerable drawbacks, in chartered accountancy they are a positive boon.

Basically, keep opinion out of the answers.

Problem isn't that people don't know how - it's that they don't want to do it.
A lot of the polls are made simply to bolster their own opinion - so they are worded to make agreeing with them more desireable.
Siggy.
