Lone Activist Group Submits 99.8% of FCC Complaints

"Mediaweek is reporting that complaints to the FCC are rising. Powell spoke before congress, detailing that the complaints are up from 14,000 in 2002, to nearly 240,000 in 2003. There were only 350 complaints during 2000 and 2001. Powell failed to mention however that 99.8% of those complaints came from PTC (Parents Television Council). The article does mention he may have been unaware of this fact. Jonathan Rintels (president of the Center for Creative Voices in Media) commented, 'It means that really a tiny minority with a very focused political agenda is trying to censor American television and radio.'"

This is ridiculous. Why do you even have to have someone regulating "decency". It's insane. What is this, 1950? OMG, I saw a nipple, I will now have to go on a rampage and kill me some prostitutes. Puh - leeze.
Can anyone point me to a credible study about the effects of nudity on children?
Weren't we all naked once? I mean, the human race did not arrive on this planet fully clothed. Whether you believe in creation or evolution, we were definitely naked at first.

It's based upon our "Puritan" heritage. We were a bunch of right-wing, conservative nuts when we landed on this continent, and by God, we'll be conservative, right-wing nutjobs (albeit with guns) when we're finally taken off the face of the planet.

This is why we have the War On Drugs (we're losing), the War on Sex (Ashcroft and pals trying to remove porn from everywhere), Prohibition (no alcohol in the entire country, major flop, repealed in the 30's,) an FCC in the first place, and probably why teen pregnancies, drug use, and rampant violence are ever increasing. (don't talk about it, maybe it'll go away)

Alas, such things have been around for longer than any of the Bush family have been holding public office.

That sounds really disproportionate to me. On one hand, I'm not surprised. But on the other, that's a lot of complaining. Ugh.

I for one HATE this! Its like there on a Dam crusade or something? What are they on anyways? Obviously a power trip............. THIS is what I think of cencorship!!!

I think the only way to further censor American television would be to show a black screen on all stations 24 / 7.

One station put Kevin Smith's early movie 'Mallrats' on - I swear I hardly recognized it - it was so cut, swapped, changed, that what little plot the movie had was wiped out - it made no sense... Why they put it on in the first place is beyond me.

Personally I think they should take all the money they waste trying to make TV 'clean' and teach people how to raise their kids.... The TV isn't a babysitter..

And besides.. making TV clean is like trying to sterilize a turd -- I don't care how long you scrub it - it's still a lump of shit.

It would behoove us all to listen to what the PTC says. Filth on tv is turning this great arrogant nation of ours into a stinkin' cesspool. You pointy headed liberals embrace the filth, but you never think of the children. Our studies show that a naked female dirty pillow can cause the brain of a 5 year old to explode. We have the proof, and because our scientists wear white lab coats, they must be right. Females should remain draped at all times, and all bathing shoud be done in darkness, with thick mittens. The mere sight of a dirty pillow in the mirror could lead to thoughts of sexuality.

Its a known fact that we were all born with Original Sin. We all came here because our parents played "Hide the Fireman" in a moment of weakness. In developing countries, mothers expose their children to smut every day. They expose a dirty pillow to their infant children, and allow that child to suckle upon it. Its a known fact that Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden both suckled as infants. Look at the end result. Pure evil.

I learned from reliable sources that the PTC's own Lara Mahaney was on the links with God himself last week. God told Mahaney that depictions of partial nudity are bad, and they lead to our youth self-abusing themselves. Self abuse leads to blindness, hairy palms, and for males, their firemen falling off. God also mandates that the time spent in self-abuse could be better spent collecting donations for your local Republican politicians and favorite televangelists.

We all need to come together and fight evil people like Janet Jackson, and that equally evil vixen Beyonce. The future of our youth demands it. Nude dirty pillows are such a threat, bigger than even terrorists, WMDs and free thinking people.

Very true. I think most of the censorship crowd consists of nobodys whose only way to "be somebody" is to tell everyone else what to do. If they acheive their goals, they have power, if not, they still get attention.

Control freaks are everywhere, even in SL they pop up around the edges.

There is definitely an insidious network of hard-core control freaks trying to take over the world though. I am all too often reminded of 1984. They've been at it for centuries (millenia?), honing their techniques. Not saying it's like one single conspiracy, just using "them" to mean all the people that are really serious about dominating the planet.

One big problem for them is - spontaneous order is stronger. You can't make an economy work on a top down model for very long, etc etc. Sooner or later all the chaotic little people slide out of your grasp.
That's why they are so interested in education. If they can make us more predictable and mechanical, the job becomes much easier.

Another is - each other. They will work together if they must, but they can't really ever trust each other for long. "There can be only one" and all that.

I agree David. That damn book learnin is what got up into the mess in the first place.

American Library Association denounces proposed bill to ban
state funds for gay and lesbian books
(CHICAGO) The following is a statement from American Library Association (ALA) President Carol Brey-Casiano:

"It is alarming and discouraging that Alabama state Representative Gerald Allen is proposing to ban books about lesbian and gay people from public libraries, schools and universities. Not only is the bill unworkable, it is discriminatory and unconstitutional.

"Libraries are for everyone - of all backgrounds and viewpoints - and provide a broad spectrum of materials from which to choose. This is what makes libraries the most democratic of institutions in this country.

"Every year, the American Library Association learns of hundreds of attempts to remove books from our public libraries and schools. Most of these books stay available because teachers, librarians and community members stand up for literature and the freedom to choose what to read and view. We trust that Alabama legislators will stand up to this latest attempt to censor our library collections."
