I keep on running into people that I would never have imagined speak Spanish.

Just the other day I landed at a telehub and someone I had never met before started talking to me in Spanish. She was from Chile. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised.

I always enjoy meeting people in SL that either are native Spanish speakers or have an interest in the Spanish language.

I just formed a group called "Sociedad Hispana de SL". I sent invites to some of the folks I know speak Spanish. If I missed some of you, sorry :( my memory is not what it should be.

But anyway, the purpose of the group is for all of us to know who speaks the language and maybe get together here and there and party en Español!

You can always just ask:
¿Cual es tu edad?

But that wouldn't be funny. :p

The group is open to all, so you can simply search for the group and join.

I'll send you an invite, Fran.

RL Hijack-

My friend Anna has Korean parents, but was born and raised in South America and learned Spanish as her first language. Now she lives in Los Angeles, where lots of people know Spanish. The irony is that everyone assumes she doesn't know Spanish because she looks Asian. More than once she's caught someone goofing on her in Spanish to their friends, assuming she wouldn't understand. Boy, are they surprised when she responds :D

My brother is a cop with the gang unit and unfortunately, this means he has to deal with mostly Latinos (yes, there are black, asian and white gangs also, but his area is mostly Latin). He has blonde hair and blue eyes, but was born and raised in Mexico City.

You should hear the stories he tells me on what people say to each other when detained, assuming he does not speak Spanish - things like "Did you hide the pot inside the can like I told you?" Its funny.

Its sometimes difficult not looking the way people expect you to look. Since I have a Spanish accent and do not look like the stereotypical Mexican (people always think I am Italian), I always get the "Where are you from" speech, and when I respond "from Mexico", I always get the "No, you don't look Mexican". Well, how are Mexicans supposed to look like? How are Americans supposed to look like? Nowadays, I just like to say I am an American and tell them that if they have 20 minutes I will go through my entire family roots with them.

And like your friend, many times I have heard Spanish speaking men talking about my wife or myself. I love saying something back in Spanish and seeing their eyes pop out of their sockets.

Unfortunately many people (including many Latin Americans themselves) think Latin Americans are a homogenous race of people. Far from it, we are Indian, Black, White, Oriental, you name it. You go to places like Peru, and you will see a definite Japanese influence. Mexico is mostly mestizo, a mix of Indian and Spanish. The Caribbean Indian and Black, and so on.

I really lost out on my heritage. I was born in Puerto Rico, to two Puerto Rican parents. Left for NYC when I was six months old and *never* became fluent in the language.

I know a bit of Spanish -- just enough to make my grandmother happy and tease her about how I need viagra when we passed the Pfizer plant in PR. I really love it as a language, though, and it's great to see other speakers here.

Never too late to start! Most community colleges offer Spanish and you will never lack someone to practice with. It really comes in handy nowadays.

Cheers
