Is the Seburo being updated any more?

My Seburo is no longer auto-updating the way it used to. I have a v1.3.01k, and the latest (according to the notecard at a Seburo vendor) is v.1.3.47i. Now it used to be when I attached it, it would offer me updates, but this isn't happening any more. Francis Chung has apparantly gone on a "sabbatical" after the recent LSL code hack, I hear.

With her out of game for a while, did updates cease? And can someone confirm that 1.3.47i is the latest?

The automatic updater was compromised during the script exploit. I believe for this reason it was taken offline.

A shame, too.
I'm about to need something along those lines as I'll be making alot of items that might stop working with 1.7

On the back burner, Flip and I are working on something that will auto-update any item from SLBoutique.

Currently, I've got a primitive auto-updater that pushes out new updates when new ones are available.

Actually... come to think of it, I could add a flag in the item that is FALSE on compile, and TRUE on_rez... this way, when an avatar first uses it, it turns true. Then, I can send an email when it turns true the first time, informing my server that the current user is active. Then I would have a way to see if users have stopped using the item / are banned / etc, and should not get future updates. Hawt!

Or just llObjectOwner() != llObjectCreator(), that way you don't spam yourself with the updates.

The Sunday before the exploit was made aware the the public, I was made aware that the seburo & saedaku update scripts had been opened by an attack on SL.

As it turns out, people were exploiting the update system, and using it to pirate Seburos. So I turned off the update servers. I figured that the release version was already out there for a month, and most of the people already snagged the new version.

I think 1.3.47i was the last publically released version. Before I took my leave of SL, there was another version with a few new features.

At any rate, I haven't been back to SL since the incident. I haven't decided if I will ever return to Second Life, much less whether to continue the Seburo project.

I've thought a bit over the update problem. I have a list of every single person who's legitimately purchased a Seburo. The Seburos update system can transition to the Wet Ikon update system, but it's a lot of work to convert. An "upgrade" path for the seburo was never a design criteria of the new Wet Ikon system. On the plus side, it would not be vulnerable to attacks on SL's permission system.

As for your case Aaron, I do need to make a brief stop through SL soon to fulfill some obligations. I can send you a copy of the upgraded Seburo, or if you don't want to wait, you can just buy it from the vendor. I'll refund you when I stop through.

Edit: Typo

Francis,

I completely understand where you are coming from. I hope you will choose to return one day, even if you no longer share your inventions with others.

It's disappointing that things turned out the way they did. I had plans to roll out some e-commerce stuff later this year, but I've decided to just stick with having one client, who is willing to accept the high risk of operating in this environment. I do commend those who manage to make a living in SL, but what happened last month just confirms my view that SL is best taken as a hobby. It seems to me that SL has the potential to become a significant or even primary source of income for many people. If it lasts long enough, it seems almost inevitable. However, that will only be feasible if some changes happen, and I think you and I both know what those changes are.

Thanks Francis, that is very cool of you. As I'm strapped for cash (as I usually am), I would appreciate an upgrade at your convenience. I was one of those that drooled over the Seburo for weeks, saving up until I have enough to buy it, bringing my balance to $0. I was very upset to hear about the breech and the people who were harmed by it. Your innovations will be missed in SL should you not return, but I would understand if you do not. In any case, thanks for making my SL experience just a little bit better.

As a proud and satisfied Seburo customer I am saddened by this turn of events. I want to thank Francis for her contributions to SL and encourage her to not give up on this place.

Don't let the terrorists (hacks) win! Abandon the project if you must but please don't leave us alone in the darkness.
